Happy New Year! I apologize for typing English here as I am very slow in
typing Chinese. I just recently noticed the pets board on mitbbs and found
it very friendly and informative, especially to me, a novice cat owner.
I adopted a male kitten from shelter in August 2009. He was born in May
2009 and had quite a few medical history -- diarrhea and parasites. The vet
cured those problems one month after the adoption. The kitten did great
through the year. He is 100% indoor and is the only cat in the house.
One night early this December, I found him inactive and brought him to the
vet in the following morning. He was having a fever at 106 -- the vet said
his temperature could be higher as 106 is the highest mark on the
thermometer. He was hospitalized immediately.
In the following three weeks, he has been in and out of hospital, and has
taken ultra-b, x rays, blood tests, etc. All his organs seemed okay except
the heart murmur that was found in his second-time hospitalization.
He has been under antibiotics since then, however, his temperature is still
on the borderline -- from 101.8 to 103. The vet still could not figure out
the reason of the fever, and suggested a cardiovascular exam next week.
Although the bill is running high (>$3,000 after the cardio exam), I am not
going to give up. I just have no clue how possible my cat got into this
fever and what I can do to avoid this pain.
After reading the posts here, I'm starting to change food and litter. Any
advice or experience in similar situation, I'd highly appreciate.

all vaccines for both indoor and outdoor up to date. I'll google on FeLV...

the disease is exposure to other cats. My cat has been 100% indoor and is
the only cat in house, having no contact to any other cat since adoption. |

high-end of the normal body temperature range when cats are
in clinic because they are often nervous in an unfamiliar
environment. 101.8 to 103 F may be normal for cats.
Besides the high body temperature and lethargy, are there
other symptoms? Does he have diarrhea or vomiting or yellow
eyes or swallen parts?
What food are you feeding him? Was he active before this
incidence started? Is he still eating and drinking normally?

eating and drinking normally. No diarrhea, vomiting, nor yellow eyes. I
was feeding him Purina Cat Chow indoor formula (dry cat food), and am now
switching to Wellness grain-free dry and canned food (but he does not like
the taste of new food).
I just found there was a yellow-bean-size swollen part under his jaw (left
side). Maybe it has been there for a few days, I regret that I just saw it
though I was feeding him antibiotics and wiping his drool twice a day. I'll
take him to vet next Monday. Maybe that's the cause. Thanks.

That "swollen part" you mentioned is likely to be his lymph node and
yellow-bean-size is normal for a lymph node of a kitten. Probably no
worry there at all.
Though we can not find out the cause of the fever, you are
right in the attempt to make his food better.
My cats don't like wellness either. If you have some local pet stores,
you can do some food trial. I suggest the following can food:
Natural Balance Ocean whitefish
Solid Gold Chicken, Turkey, Whitefish&liver formula
Weruva Steak frites
Weruva Paw lickin' chicken

reviews during the break, and I've learned a lot and saved food
recommendations by you and others. The closest Petco does not have Innova
EVO and Weruva. I'll go to other stores to find them tomorrow. Thanks.

Try your local pet store for the food recommended on this board. Start from
what your kitty likes (be it poultry or seafood). I found that none of my
two cats like rabbit, venison, or beef. It makes sense because in the wild
I don't think they would have a chance to eat something so much bigger than
they are. :)

food like Wellness/EVO/Innova in Petsmart or Petco (at least
in the place I live, i can not find any real healthy adult
cat food from petsmart). Can you try some local small pet
stores? I think it may be fairly easy to find the Natural
Balance brand. I find some small pet stores having very
limited selections of cat food, but they often carry the
Natural Balance brand.

steak frites. But that's the only beef flavor
they love. They generally prefer seafood and
poultry flavor.

Petco store here carries Natural Balance, Wellness, and Soulistic grain-free
food store. I never paid attention to local pet stores, and will go visit
one. |
