I am current a PhD student. I will start as an AP this fall.
I have a question about OPT and H1B.
Do I need to first apply for OPT? Since H1B for faculties can start anytime,
is it common to directly apply for H1B and skipping OPT?

发帖数: 195 | 3 You can file for OPT first and petition for H1B later. It's up you. I know
someone even filed both at the same time. No really sure about that.
But once your H1B is approved, your OPT will be automatically void. This is
what I was told.

发帖数: 55 | 4 I filed my OPT petition in April and planned to use it in fall. However, our
human resource officer recently suggested me to apply H1B as soon as
possible, because I could not have the pension benefit if working with OPT.
I just contacted our ISO to initiate the process in summer. |
