是否我离开了幼年时代而到达童年时代，或童年到我身上替代了幼年？但前者并没有离
去，它能往何处去呢？可是它已经不存在了。我已经不是一个不言不语的婴儿，已经成
为呀呀学语的孩子了。据我记忆所及，从此以后，我开始学语了，这也是我以后注意到
的。并不是大人们依照一定程序教我言语，和稍后读书一样；是我自己，凭仗你，我的
天主赋给我的理智，用呻吟、用各种声音、用肢体的种种动作，想表达出我内心的思想
，使之服从我的意志；但不可能表达我所要的一切，使人人领会我所有的心情。为此，
听到别人指称一件东西，或看到别人随着某一种声音做某一种动作，我便记下来：我记
住了这东西叫什么，要指那件东西时，便发出那种声音。又从别人的动作了解别人的意
愿，这是各民族的自然语言：用面上的表情、用目光和其他肢体的顾盼动作、用声音表
达内心的情感，或为要求、或为保留、或是拒绝、或是逃避。这样一再听到那些语言，
按各种语句中的先后次序，我逐渐通解它们的意义，便勉强鼓动唇舌，借以表达我的意
愿。
从此，我开始和周围的人们使用互相达意的信号，在父母的约束下、在尊长的指导下，
更进一步踏入人类生活翻复动荡的社会。

against the precepts of my parentsand of those teachers. For this
learning which they wished me to acquire--no matter whattheir motives were--

of victory,and I loved to have my ears tickled with lying fables, which made
them itch even more ardently, and a similar curiosity glowed more and more
in my eyes for the shows and sportsof my elders. Yet those who put on such
shows are held in such high repute that almost alldesire the same for their
children. They are therefore willing to have them beaten, if
theirchildhood games keep them from the studies by which their parents
desire them to growup to be able to give such shows. Look down
on these things with mercy, O Lord, and deliverus who now call upon
thee; deliver those also who do not call upon thee, that they may callupon
