Africa这个词或词根出自何方？最传统的说法，也是曾经被广为接受的说法是：古腓尼
基语“尘土”或“沙尘”之意。维基百科的英文版上面已经有很详细的解释，各种说法
也都列出来了，我就不多抄书了。
然而，如果我没有理解错的话，你的问题主要不是问Africa这个词是怎么来的，而是从
何时起，由何人开始，使用Africa这个词来被指代地中海南岸的广鹜土地？:)
这个问题，如同Africa这个词的词源一样，目前貌似没有一个明确答案。传统的说法，
当然是来自罗马人。公元前一世纪到一世纪，是罗马文化，同时也是罗马史学的大爆发
时期，此间涌现出了李维，阿庇安，普鲁塔克，塔西佗，等等，一大批在历史上留下浓
墨重彩的史学家。这些人的著作当中，都反复以Africa这个词来称呼北非，特别是同亚
平宁半岛最接近的北非土地（即迦太基，然而从上下文的意思来看，“阿非利加”这个

似乎就是去年，曼德拉去世的时候，网上出现了一篇帖子，信誓旦旦地说南非的衰落是
因为曼德拉领导的黑人政权上台。而这篇帖子在网上被疯传，题目被改了好多遍，流毒
甚广，许多网友看了帖子的内容都相信了“曼德拉是南非的罪人”这个说法。但实际上
，南非不论在经济上还是政治上，都是各国学者们研究的热点，而对于南非种族隔离前
后的经济、社会状况，南非种族隔离，黑人政权上台的历史事实，至少在事实层面上学
术界已经达成了共识。而这些结论，其实只需要百度一下就可以鉴别真伪，但是却有这

但是我附加一点：
这几个地名都是不断变化的。比如亚细亚本来连阿拉伯，印度都不包括，后来连中国日
本都含进去了。
现在的阿非利加这个词一般说是罗马人起的名字，说的就是你说的北非西部那一块。罗
马还有一个阿非利加省。但是更早古希腊人那里，比如希罗多德时代，把埃及西边的北
非叫做利比亚。埃及南边叫做“阳光灼热之地”（Afriki)。把黑人叫做太阳之子，或
者阳光之子。
至于罗马人给迦太基那一代起的名字Africa，是不是意译或者音译了希腊人，是有争论
的。多半说是意译了希腊人的，也就是意思上也是“阳光之地”，但是位置不同，从罗
马的视角的南方，有了转移。后来被阿拉伯人抄去了。
