AIX is UNIX os but changed to fit for it hardware.
It is not so popular as SUN OS because RS is too expensive.
Some time, when you book a RS/AS computer and you will get one copy of AIX.
DeepBlue(深蓝) is hundreds of RS/6000 set as cluster.
In my experience, AIX is really good in business and database. Powerful
and safe and will run for years not down.
But AS/390, RS/6000... are very expensive, usually cost $500000--$1000000.

IBM pSeries servers (used to be call RS/6000). AS/400, or
the new iSeries, doesn't run AIX, it runs OS/400.
I also don't understand how SUNOS or Solaris get to be so
popular. When doing head to head comparison, IBM's Unix
server can alway beat Sun's server in price (yes price) and
performance. That's why I am puzzled.
If someone can really tell me why people don't like AIX or
RS/6000(this can be proved by Sun's market share), please

First of all, I had very limited experience with AIX, and as far as I know
there is no AIX in my department.
Vendors tend to play magic with numbers. Benchmarks depend on
too many things. I don't know why you said IBM beats Sun in performance,
and honestly, I doubt it has any real sense.
You can think so. People always write/test software for mainstream
systems. If I write a software, I will certainly test it on Solaris
and Linux, and may never take the effort to port it to AIX or IRIX.

发帖数: 70 | 9 上次发问的时候其实并没有找到问题，现在已经把问题 narrow down 了，具体是
1 程序以 root 身份启动
2 提高优先级 （nice 一个负值）
3 seteuid 将 effective user id 换成非 root
4 pthread_create() <==== core dump
在第4步的时候出现了 core dump。
如果把第2步的nice去掉（即不提高进程的优先级），则没有问题。
如果把第3步的seteuid去掉 （即不换用户），也没有问题。
但是我要做的是：程序必须以root启动，尽量提高优先级好让以后创建的线程也有
高优先级，但是创建的线程不能有 root 权限。
上述 1-4 步在 linux 上没有问题， 在 AIX 5.1, 5.2 也没有问题，结果在
AIX 5.3 上就会 core dump， 实在是搞不清楚为什么，请大侠指点 ...

runs on AIX 6.
I wonder which version of GCC I should install. A couple of years ago I used
gcc 3.4.x and later used 4.4.1. Now it seems that it is going up to 4.6.1.
The main objective is to be able to do standard non-fancy c++ programming.
Compiling speeding is not a major concern as my projects are not big.

technology is not officially supported on AIX and the main issue lies in
that g++ cannot link libraries right due to name mangling.
On IBM's bbs, people told me it is very challenging to use c++/ILOG Concert
on AIX. I want to try my luck here. |

I don't think so. Even a path difference can stop you from compiling a
software, and the difference among Unix platforms is not trivial. Think about
open source developpers. How many of them use Solaris and how many use AIX.
There is no market demand on them, while on Unix what we use daily is almost
always open source software.
Since I never administered AIX machines, I can't say you are wrong.
But there is a HP-UX and SGI in my department, and I have to say they
have given us too much hea |

I tried to install with binaries but don't have access to /usr/local which the
binaries try to install to.
Then I tried to install from source, configureed OJ but had building errors.
Not sure the reason but probably that I didn't use GNU Make. the install notes
say that AIX Make frequently has problems with GCC makefiles so GNU Make is
recommended.
Tried to instll GNU make from source but had the priviledge issue

AIX 通常是要装在IBM P series 的机器上。大型的P series的机器通常可以在一个
physical的机器（叫CEC）上create几个甚至很多Logical partition，简称lpar。
aix software应该不是free的。update和patches可以在IBM website下载，但是base的
software要从IBM获得，不能下载。
值得讲下的，p series的机器也可以装Linux。 |

我在Linux和Solaris上，都能通过procfs比较容易地找到，
但是上了AIX就发现根本找不到。注意，我可能从任何一个
path来run这个程序，所以/proc/pid/cwd显然不行。

However this is not what we are discussing, right? From an
SA point of view, only things AIX is significantly different
from Solaris are System Mgmt tools, and File systems. Looks
like we all agree Linux is the future, and how do you see
Sun's embrassing stance on Linux and open source movement?

computer lab machines are all sparcs, now you see all those PII, PIII
Wintel machines donated by Intel and/or Microsoft instead.
Linux is extremely popular in academia, the growing trend is
school admins start installing nt/linux dual boots in labs :P
Supercomputing facilities are still being dominated by AIX though,
the growing trend is they are being replaced by linux or NT clusters. |

first, I can't use tab to auto complete file name
I wrote set filec in .cshrc and soured it, no effect.
second, I can't use up/down arrow to browse commands history
How can I fix it? should I tell the root to do something? (he knows
little about unix, but I can't just tell him that)

I tried again:
first tried to reinstall gmake using --prefix option. there are some errors on
compile but it got installed. I guess still not correctly.
Then used the gmake to install gcc. configured OK using --prefix option. Then
build using gmake bootstrap-lean but failed with foloowing errors:

屏幕“恢复”到运行这些程序之前的样子。比如，我先运行了ls，屏幕
上列出了现在目录的文件，然后我运行less查看某个文件的内容，等退
出less之后，屏幕回到运行less之前的样子，我还能看到原来ls的输出
结果。这个要怎么设置？OS是AIX 5.2，shell是ksh或者bash。我已经把
TERM设置为xterm了。
