Calvin's Inconsistency
In his discussions of Total Depravity, Calvin sometimes seemed confused and
unable to articulate his ideas well. He theorized that totally depraved man
naturally loves truth, but not enough; still he has great gifts from his Cre
ator, and everyone should know that whatever truth he has comes from God - y
et he cannot fully know the truth and thus be saved.
One is left to wonder about the exact meaning of this terminology and where
it is stated in Scripture. At... 阅读全帖

Does the New Testament define Christianity?
The Gospels lack any explicit treatment of the word Christian. Indeed, the
word appears only three times in the New Testament, and never from the mouth
of Christ himself. The word Christianity is entirely absent from the New
Testament.
Acts 11:26 tells us that “the disciples were called Christians first in
Antioch.” Here, the passive construction “were called Christians”
suggests that the term was first used not by Christians, but by non-
Christians. (... 阅读全帖

6:8-10 The point of vv. 8-9 is this: if we have died with Christ we will cer
tainly live with him since he died to death once and for all, it can, theref
ore, never hold sway over him again and subsequently he lives to God.
What does Paul mean when he says, “we…will live” with him (v. 8)? Is he t
hinking about our present experience as Christians, or is he thinking about
the future? This is essentially the same question we faced in v. 5. Some sch

JC's comments on 1;3
Concerning his own Son, etc. -- This is a remarkable passage, by
which we are taught that the whole gospel is included in Christ, so
that if any removes one step from Christ, he withdraws himself from the

have this day begotten thee:" for this begetting refers to what was
made known. Though some indeed find here three separate evidences of
the divinity of Christ -- "power," understanding t... 阅读全帖

Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to
come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among
you also, even as among other Gentiles.
".....We hence learn that the Lord frequently upsets the purposes of his
saints, in order to humble them, and by such humiliation to teach them to
regard his Providence, that they may rely on it; though the saints, who
design nothing without the Lord’s will, cannot be said, strictly speaking,
to be driven awa... 阅读全帖

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

" He reasons now by stating things of a contrary nature, and proves that
there is no righteousness except what is conferred, or comes through the
gospel; for he shows that without this all men are condemned: by it alone
there is salvation to be found. And he brings, as the first proof of
condemnation, the fact,... 阅读全帖
