“和子”一词加进尼西亚信条而起。使徒信经(Apostles’Greed)论到圣灵，只说“我
信圣灵”，325年的尼西亚信经仍然是“我信圣灵”，381年却加了“从父和子(
filiopue)出来”，解释圣灵之由出，即由圣父“和子”而出，此议立刻遭到东正教(
Eastern Orthodox)历害的反对。加进“和子”一词，既未事先征询希腊教会的意见，
又没得到公认的大公会议(Council)的认可；希腊教会一发现此事，即怒不可遏，几经
抗议无效，终于引致东、西教会的分裂。近年企图使二派复和的争辩简史，亦是集中在
解决“和子”的问题，只可惜收效不著。
东、西方第一次在此问题交锋，是589年的托莱多第三次会议(the Third Council
