I’m leaving bioinformatics to go work at a software company with more
technically ept people and for a lot more money. This seems like an
opportune time to set forth my accumulated wisdom and thoughts on
bioinformatics.
My attitude towards the subject after all my work in it can probably be best
summarized thus: “Fuck you, bioinformatics. Eat shit and die.”

我在一个完全不懂生物信息的MD/PhD老板那儿读bioinformatics phd（听着就滑稽）。
毕业后phd title应该是bioinformatics program的，其实本质是genomics/NGS的，所
以也做一些wet实验。计算方面也就只会基于现成软件run pipeline，会python，R，
linux但也是皮毛。
我现在的目标是postdoc期间一定不能做bench就满意了。但我这种半吊子半桶水的
bioinformatics phd，能找到pure bioinformatics position吗？
我想请教两个问题：
a，老板是学术和业界大牛，对于biology phd的推荐信应该很有含金量，但
bioinformatics毕竟是要求computing skill的；请问大牛MD老板的推荐信还有用吗？
还是说bioinformatics跟CS刷leetcode一样要求现场面试coding的？
b，我现在在自学data sci，machine learning，努力加强python和R，对最后找

我自己是学bioinformatics, PhD毕业正在找工作, 我瞄准的就是data scientist, 但
其实发现根本没那么容易,首先学位就不是computer science 和 statistics, 很多HR
第一关就去掉了, 因为他们根本不知道什么是bioinformatics, 另外, 很多data
scientist job都是在business,bank或者非生物领域, 基本上生物背景也比较难挤进去
. 而且, data scientist要求的那些技能跟传统bioinformatics差别还是很大的, 传统
bioinformatics基本就是现在流行的NGS data analysis, 而data scientist却要求很
多machine learning, hadoop等, 感觉大部分bioinformatics接触不到或者不需要这些

我觉得这问题不用担心。学BIoinfo 是因为热爱生物科学，而CS技巧是
bioinformtics expert 必须具备的能力之一。所以，如果bioinformatics
不行了，还可以进计算机公司干IT。这是我觉得干bioinformatics 同时
心理比较踏实的一个大原因是知道自己掌握的技巧并不只有在生物公司才能
发挥。
如果纯粹为了钱，不考虑自己的爱好前途去做Bioinformatics, 是有点吃力
不讨好。只学CS，不学biology , 就能赚比bioinformatics 多的钱。
现在经济衰退是临时的，我估计CS人才很快又会抢手得不得了。Bioinformatics
再热门，估计也热门不过纯做CS/IT的行业。 |

标 题: bioinformatics在工业界的职位？

PhD到高年级了，要考虑毕业找工作的事情了。以前一直打算在学术界混，不过这年头
学术界太难找到faculty位置了，我们实验室我导师欣赏的u一个博士后，就因为英语不
好（法国人，有很重的口音），面试n个学校都没有拿到offer，黯然去英国做资深博士
后了。我老英语比他只差不好，实在很难在这边找到教职。原本打算回国做青教的，但
是女朋友喜欢国外，不想回国，所以还得考虑在这边找工作。个人有一定的编程底子，
也比较喜欢编程。本科生物背景，有6年perl编程经验，三年C++编程经验，入门级R/
MySQL经验（最近用的太少，忘的差不多了），做的都是bioinformatics相关的学术项
目。现在做的东西比较偏统计模型，熟悉基本的统计模型，用C++写过较复杂的MCMC程
序。比较想做模型/程序的开发，不太想捣鼓... 阅读全帖 |
