Indeed, there are many Ph.D. programs that can be closed. The first one on
my list to close would be the Religion program in Columbia university. Why
do we need Ph.D.'s specializing in religion? Leave that area to the rabis
and ministers!

I think it's you who missed the point.
The current system do not prevent an outsider from making it inside the
system. It just makes it very hard for an outsider, but very easy for an
insider. And for an outsider to advance in the system, he would need to
find support from insiders, who make up a large percentage of the ruling
class.
The older system that you seem to hold a false romantic view about also
admits far more people from privileged groups than people from lower social
