There are a number of things that could be causing this p0420 catalyst
efficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter itself is
no longer functioning properly. The other likely thing is the rear O2 (
oxygen) sensor is no longer working properly. Other things could include
exhaust leaks, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors,
plugged catalytic converter, etc.

但是catalytic converter 前面的O2 sensor,必须用个 O2 sensor wrench, 因为一般
的扳子根本够不着。而且就算有O2 sensor wrench，也不容易拧，你力气小些，扳子根
本不转啊。我是用锤子砸扳子，然后带动O2 sensor wrench，最后sensor 就松点了。
一个多钟头才搞下来。也是累个半死，当然没喷什么PB啊啥的。所以车铺子要60刀的
labor fee 也觉得可以理解。 |

问题出现经过：
前天晚上，加油门时偶尔听到前盖方向有轻微的叮当响，像茶杯盖擦碰茶杯的声音，很
脆，没怎么在意。 昨天在路上，加油门时，突然听到引擎传来巨大的轰轰轰的声音（
声音是突然变成这种很大的轰轰声，不是之前听到的引擎噪音），我还以为是旁边开来
哈雷了。个人怀疑是muffler 出问题了，不过声音不像是从后面来的，所以也可能是前
面的catalytic converter。现在车正常运行，只是加油门声音很大，感觉油门没力，
加油门或路上颠簸时偶尔还有叮当响。不知道是否只是muffler的问题，如果是
catalytic conveter，是否有必要换，请高手指教。谢了。
车是从dealer买来的旧车，有2年的power train warranty， 买车的时候dealer比较无
赖， 不信任他。 下周打算去朋友推荐的个人车铺看一下。如果不是引擎问题，就在车

READING
CODE是这样的： troubleshooting P0420
Definition:

我的车型号是2003 SUBAR LEGANCY AWD Special edition的，买的时候MILEAGE比较高
，OVER 160K了。前几个月换过一次整个的刹车片和盘，用了440刀左右。 这个然后
AUTOZONE的人给了我他们能ORDER到我的车的型号的的CAT 也就是CATALYTIC CONVERTER
的价格是：331.99.不算LABOR还。
我有几个问题向班上大牛请教，也研究了一下本版的关于CAT的问题，感觉很严重，于
是忧心忡忡，车子买吧到半年吧。开起来总体还不错，除了那个刹车的问题 |

发帖数: 46 | 12 刚买的二手车check engine light就亮了(mechanical check时没大问题)，车行查完code说是catalytic converter坏了，换新的加labor估计要700+。
组里老外建议联系ford custom service因为ford有transferable emission warranty for 8years or 80000miles，打电话过去ford确实说如果是emission system的问题并且warranty valid的话可以免费修，不过如果不是emission的问题或者因为过去车主过错void warranty的话不给修还要收80-150的diagnosis fee。
上一任车主说过去有过类似的情况是因为fuel cap没盖紧过几天就会好，我也倾向于相信他，不过撂了三四天了灯还没灭心里不踏实。
请问高手有没有价值去ford dealer那看看呢？谢谢了！
另外在版上考古了一番，发现XX管子破了，fuel cap不紧，O2sensor，catalytic
converter等啥问题都有可能，请问这些问题都会给出同样的code吗？ |

问了很多家，贵的（包括dealer）：~1300 （～$1100 part+ $200 labor）
便宜的:~600 （～$485 part+ $90 labor）
网上和autozone有更便宜的part。感觉labor 是1-2hr.
说可以凑活开着，check engine light is on 没关系，但是如果是flash，就要立马修。
我问他们反正凑活2-3月没问题。
另外如果catalytic converter是坏的，annual inspection过不了。 |

is very expensive, especially considering the LZ 's car 's mileage: his car
's catalytic converter's life is already limited.
also bad sensor could cause incorrect fuel/air ratio which will result in lose of
power and carbon deposition
some cars have the sensor near the firewall. that is pain in the ass.
if that is the case,suggest going to a cheap garage
otherwise it is simple.

98烤肉啦，8万多邁，买菜车，一直运转正常，现在开起来也没有异常
Engine本身应该没有问题吧？需要立即修么？
车里没有坏味道，是不是catalytic converter 没坏
有可能是因为加了便宜的油么？那条街上几家加油站比别的地方便宜3,4毛钱。看网上
说可以加97号油稀释一下，会好么？
再有会不会是跑的狠了，空调开的很大，车窗忘了关了。

Engine灯亮了有一段时间了也没在意，认为只是油箱盖盖不紧的缘故（原车主当时已告
知）。因为年检8月到期，上周六找了家Shell去做state inspection，结果人家说
engine灯亮着不能检，让我们先解决这个问题。
于是回家路上就去了常去换机油的一家firestone，说检查灯亮原因要100刀，很贵呀，
不过被忽悠了半天居然还是同意了。没想到这一检还发现了大问题，说我们车的
catalytic converter和fuel vapor storage canister都要换，加上labor差不多要
1400刀！！这下再忽悠也不听了，说得先考虑考虑就拿着单子回家了。
在网上找了一圈中国人开的修车铺，打了几个电话，发现检查engine灯可不要100，还
有免费的，而且firestone的检查结果他们也不认，都要重新检查了再看要修什么。周
一我们就找了一家免费检查的去看，也查出来两个code，不过一个是油箱盖没盖紧，另

。找了附近一个老美的修车行，电话里说大概不到600块的样子，早上把车送去，结果
人说还需要做个diagnosis，一百多刀，我觉得没必要，但是他们说firestone的人不专
业，也许我并不需要换catalytic converter，而是一个sensor就解决问题了，这样的
事情他们说见了很多次。
由于之前firestone的报告找不到了。也不是在附近做的。所以在纠结，要不要再做一
遍这个检查，求建议。谢谢！ |

以前排气管漏的时候，不管车是停着还是开着，只要给油门就响，我现在是停车的时候

有个共同点：都只是在高速行70mph或者稍高时出现的。
感觉多数是：车子在起伏的告诉上比较颠簸的时候出现的。似乎设成cruise是容易出现
问题。
以前是要3000-4000 miles,甚至上万miles出现一次,都是P0420(catalytic system
efficiency below threshold),用ODBII scanner将其reset掉，不影响SMOG检查通过。
最近出现比较频繁些，用ODBII scanner将灯reset掉 ，大约几十miles出现一次，后来
查出来是enginee valve cover gasket破裂，换了之后好多了。现在有时500miles以上
才engine light on,有时100 miles engine light on.
最特殊的一次是20miles之后发现 P0420 pending,过了500 miles再去读，没有error
code，似乎自动复位掉了。

legal, 就是不卖加州的地址。别的州的 cc 我看都不贵。
最好不要马上修，如果这个是其他问题引起 catalytic converter 坏掉，比如燃烧不
完全，即使 converter 修好了，也很容易再坏掉。花了很多钱，等大半年 smog test
不过，难道再修？不如在 smog test 前一周左右修，然后赶紧过 smog test, 即使很
快再坏掉，反正还能在开两年，值了。 |

1. 很多人给MDX和TL（SH-AWD版）做过dyno，四个轮的轮上马力大概在280多左右，网
上可以查到很多dyno实测结果，最好的甚至轮上就已经超过300马力。种种迹象表明
Acura低标了马力。从我实际试开TL和MDX的感觉来讲，还有各媒体实测MDX的加速成绩

长话短说：
引擎灯总亮，开始是p2187(Fuel system too lean at idle - bank 1)
于是换了MAF sensor;
过了几天灯又亮，读code是p302（cylinder #2 misfire)，于是把spark-plug和cable
一起换了（当时看到#2的cable非常松，都突出来了，不知道怎么回事）
再过一两周灯还亮，读code是p300（random cylinder misfire)，出现有时候停车熄火
（得油门给点油） ...
下一步该如何？（如果自己可以比较容易做的可以考虑，要不然还是去车铺）
喷油嘴（fuel injector)?
oxygen sensor 影响不到发动机本身（idle时转速忽高忽低）吧？
PCV有关系不?

legal 的，搜遍各种网站都没有，偶尔有也要 1000 多，最后什麽都没买。修
catalytic converter 太费钱了。车子都不值那个钱。还不如不年检赌一把，万一被抓
住了罚单也没两个钱。 |

CATALYTIC CONVERTER的大多数都标“不运加州，加州车辆不能用”，然后加州车能用
的CATALYTIC CONVERTER要贵200块。。。
我现在人还不在加州，下个月过去。现在开个破车也就值个4k，但是人穷又换不起新车
，就寻思能不能安个便宜的，然后就开去加州换牌照什么的，那个smog check很难过么
？有没有加州开老车的兄弟姐妹指点一下？多谢各位了！ |

前段时间版上嘀咕沃而沃这车没人买什么的，当时就想上来吭一声，这volvo在我们东
北疙瘩还是横行天下的，路上很多见。
这车我开了两年多了，买的时候，仔细根mdx比较了一下，两个车价格差不多，但是同
样价格，mdx配置要好一些，尤其是mdx的内部装修，看上去volvo要好，能方东西的地
方多，这volvo的设计吧，小处上真是没人性， 到现在我都不知道纸巾盒子可以放哪里
，真是的，在车里丢来丢去，最后这盒子总是惨不忍睹。
当时驾驶的时候，操作感也是mdx轻松，动力感觉也是mdx好
至于为什么最后选择了volvo呢， 也没有什么理由，就是年少时候喜欢欧洲车，就这么
着，最后还是奔着年少时候的一个梦想而去了。
开了两年多了，总体感觉还好，没有什么毛病，就是换轮胎的时候小心痛了一下， 两
万多迈就要换了， 一换还得1200美元左右，我以前的mazda，5，6万迈才换一次轮胎，

去车铺查了车，上上下下都查了。总结了一下建议修的有这几样：
比较贵的问题：
due for timing belt; tensioner if needed
front control arms bushings torn, use new arms;
front linkes and bushings
front and rear catalytic converter heatshilds rattling;
花费比较小的问题：
lower catalytic converter studs rotted with heatshields
third brake light lens broken
left front fender liner missing
rear wiper arm damaged, new wiper arm
