Not necessary. I scratched my colleague's car in our parking lot as well. My
car is new and his is 16 years old. I propose to pay him $300 and settle
the issue between ourselves. But he wanted more. So my insurance company
paid him $430 for his old car and paid me $570 for my new car.
It ends up I get a $70 check from my insurance since I had $500 deductible.
For my colleague, he gets $130 more than I proposed. But I don't know how
much my insurance will increase.

several yrs ago, my colleague got a new XC90, its front axle got broken in
normal driving on the ramp just off the highway, its front touched ground,
quite some damage. Volvo only wanted to fix. After quite some "discussing",
she got a new one. But 2nd one was very good, no trouble and she said she
would buy again.
some other info about Volvo I heard of:
1. my friend got a 2nd hand S80, he used it as a daily commute car, no
problem what so ever for several years

I drave highlander for 12 years, and rode in colleagues RX350 many times.
Besides spaces behind second row, there is no significant difference.
Tires on RX350 might be better than highlander, which can contribute to ride
quality. I used bridgestone and then michellin after the orginal tire,
felt better ride.
Of course, highlander looks cheaper (I don't have wood trim and leather seat
).
For lexus, one colleague had a relative working as mechanic at a toyota

I do not think it is really a concern, it is good you are still remember
where you are coming from. However, it is better to use English when others
are around.
It is good idea to get in touch with your colleagues, no matter what,
because they are the one who will evaluate you, if they do not know who you
are, it is hard for them to give you good grades. A good way to start is to
find out what your colleagues are working on and maybe you will find
possible collaboration opportunity. It is better

其实面试的过程最重要的是建立 rapport, 在某些文科院系,是不是一个容易相处
的 colleague 可能比你 research 做的好不好更重要。毕竟文科专业的老师更加
注重人文方面的东西,比如沟通技巧,举止谈吐。有些时候连面试者的领带
鞋子开的玩笑都会成为讨论的一部分。归根结底,大家投不投这一票是看喜不喜欢
这个人。
偶有一个 colleague, 当时是面试四个人背景最弱的一个,当时开会的时候极有争议,
但是这个人曾经在偶们系做过 visiting scholar, 投赞成票的都是认识她的,
并且还都是这个方向的,所以最后还是要了。做了同事才知道人家真是最做人,
大方得体还特别 considerate, 作为同事,根本不关心她最后能不能拿到 tenure,

I think you may be able to seek any way to switch your fund with your
colleagues...for example, if one of your colleagues has some grants and
need to buy equipment very soon... so, if you can make a deal with him/her,
he/she can use your startup money for his/her equipment first, and later you can
get the same amount of fund from his/her grant, such as student support,
etc.

Do not deal with the student directly. Just let his/her advisor that you
never get his assignment ahead of time, which prevents you from getting
things on time. That is your colleague's business to tell his student what
to do. I typically just told my colleague about what I felt uncomfortable
about her/his advisees. They typically deal with it pretty quickly.

Wow, the chair is one of these killed! This guy killed my former colleague's
career-turning proposal a few years ago, with only his strong personal
opinion. He even did not read through the proposal, let alone understand it
well. My colleague remined me of this person in the school but I almost
forgot his name. Now he or his department now declined her tenure (at least
two papers, IF 4.5, not a bad case at all if she has some funding, in a

不能误人子弟? What makes you think you are not?
I am sure you are trying the best you can and still find it frustrating. Ok,
define good first. Good is not the dogmatic set of concepts or ideologies
that we impose to students. As beauty is in the eyes of beholders, good
should at least be partially in the mind of students.

In computer science, this is almost the case. When I graduated years ago, my
9-month salary is more than the 12-month of my colleague who worked at
Motorola Labs (which does not exist any more) and is close to the 12-month
salary for new graduate at Google (not Google Research). But my salary is
lower than my colleagues at IBM Research and GM Research.

experience of myself and my colleagues; if it is funded in the second batch,
it usually takes months, and one of my colleagues waited for almost half a
year to get the official notification.

for research uinv:
Publiication is the key, but publishing in good or top journals, quality
is more important than quantity.
Funding, nationally competitive grants is important, being PIs. get a
letter of support from 牛人 if poosibe.
Ok or above average teaching.
Get along with colleagues, good to have some close senior colleagues,
Primarily through research collaboration.

需要申请人在自己熟悉的领域主办一个新的专业学术杂志(英文期刊)
自己组建editorial board安排审稿
希望申请人有很强责任心,而且在学术界有比较丰富的人脉
杂志社主要是技术方面的辅助工作,有强大作者数据库,可以定期帮杂志call for papers
任期一般是3年一个term,会有正式offer。只要能保证杂志能定期出版,offer到期会

well, from this, one can roughly tell how male faculty members perceive
their female colleagues from a non-academic perspective.
the implication is, how likely male faculty members choose female colleagues
as their spouses if they ever have choices.
unfortunately, this opinion is representative for male faculty members, not
just chinese ones. we talk about this during happy hours. few males want a
seminar at home.

Similarly, I think it is female faculty's preference to NOT to date a male
faculty.
Who doesn't want a programmer who follow her career? I know several female
faculty that have writers and programmer as husbands and they are both happy
.
These male faculty who think dating a female faculty means seminar at home
is narrow-minded. And if I know that is what they think, I will avoid
having lunch with them. There are plenty of supportive and open minded
colleagues to hang out with .

其实,我不同意纯数学是火坑专业。
community colleague或者teaching school教书挺好的。
我读书的时候,系里superstar的几个白人和在美国长大的亚裔phd最后都去了
community colleague 或teaching school。
只有international students才会去拼research school,当然现在也没有几个人在
research school(我这一年就我一个,前几年还有几个,也都不是太好的research
school),大部分都去业界了。
在teaching school的这些美国人生活美满,非常开心,毫无压力,业余时间还能搞搞
纯数学,极为enjoyable。teaching school的工资对在乡村的美国人来说也不算低。
说实话,我虽然现在teaching load是3,但我感觉比教6门calculus(比如3+3
paralell sections)还要累。我以前也教过数学基础课,背起来课那叫一个轻松。
从研究上来讲,teaching school没有任何funding压力,也没有研究方向的限制,也... 阅读全帖

I agree with you.
If this guys is not in the same field of LZ, it is no harm to give him the
proposal. If he happens to be in a similar field, LZ can give him an old
proposal that was funded. It is hard to refuse directly if the person who
made the request could be you colleague in the next 30 years.
Also, this guy might not know the fact that people don't easily share
proposals. When I just got started I asked a friend for an NSF proposal ( he

Interesting idea. No I do not usually check that. First I use vanguard fund
outside 401k. Then I trust there had been loads of people smarter than me
and having more time than me who had double triple checked that. If the
vanguard index fund has outrageously underperformed index, some people will
roar before I had a chance to find out.
But once I checked my 401k fund performance compared to index. A colleague
asked me why our 401k fund return about 2% more than index. That cannot
