1) I have N strings and all strings has the same length L.
2) To be simplified, each string is composed by english letters.
How to select a set of M (M < N) strings that are most dissimilar?
My questions are as follows:
1) For any two strings, we can calculate the "edition distance" as the dissi
milarity. If there are more than 2, say M, strings, how to characterize the
dissimilarity of the whole set?
2) If the first question is well addressed, how to select the best M |

说retain variance并不是非此即彼的关系
至于similarity还是dissimilarity, PCA里面叫similarity matrix, PCoA里面叫

distance之类的。categorical/binary variable distance有一些不同的方法，你可以
google一下。
用PCA的方法主要目的是消除correlation，比如说三种不同的习惯，football fan/
baseball fan/table-tennis fan。
有三个人甲乙丙，习惯分别是100,010,001
如果你用euclidean distance来衡量dissimilarity的话，D(甲，乙)，D(乙，丙)和D(
甲，丙)都等于根号2。但是如果football和baseball的correlation很高，那么直观上
，我们认为甲乙的distance应该比甲丙和乙丙的距离都小。如果你用PCA得出一组新的
，互不相关的“习惯”的话，就应该不用考虑correlation的问题。不过另外的问题是怎么weighting。

才废除的），美国妇女获得投票权还没多少年，大概国会里没几个女议员。她是历史上

mythical character based on St. Nicholas. He is also known there by the name

sound proof 主要是要看 STC 指标， 低频噪音很难消除的。
1. 普通double panel 两块 1/8" 一般是 STC =26~30
如果你现在是那种老掉牙的 单层玻璃的话，换上 double panel 噪音能减一半以上
2. double panels with dissimilar thickness, 1/8" over 1/4"glasses, 我知道的
Milguard 的Tuscany Series STC = 33~34, 价格不比第一贵多少。几十块钱。
我认为这是普通民房绝对够用了，因为再高的 STC 窗就是浪费了, 声音就从其他地方
进来了，像 墙，roof/Ceiling。 一般<6inch 厚的墙 STC 也就是 36左右，也装不了
真正 STC = 38~40 的sound proofing windows, 太厚了。
现在一般厂家 double panel windows 都能做到符合 $1500 tax credit 的，问清楚，
稍微多加点钱。
