据说爱斯基摩人有几十个词来描绘雪，比如“大雪”、“小雪”、“暴雪”之类，都是
不同的词；而赤道附近某部落则用同一个词来指雪、霜、冰。这很好理解，因为爱斯基
摩人整天生活在冰天雪地里，不同的雪对他们有不同的影响，自然需要区分，而热带的
人则很少见到雪，因此也就没有必要专门发明词汇来区分它们，甚至霜、冰、雪都可以
混为一谈。
有研究表明，这个说法不尽准确，但却符合我们的印象。爱斯基摩语和赤道部落语我不
会说，但是只要在学过中学英语的人，大概就能体会到语言之间细微的不同。
比如，我当年学英语时，就大惑不解：为什么兄和弟都是brother，姐和妹都是sister

Gibon的书太大，而且主要写衰亡
。你可以看Apianus的罗马史，还有Livy的罗马史，但是是罗马人写的，
开头都是残篇。Penguin系列丛书，大部分美国书店都可以买到。前者有中文版，
商务出的。
如果介绍性质的，可以看中文的科瓦廖夫：古罗马史，商务或者三联50年代版本。
还有王以铸翻译的《奥古斯都》的前言。。英文的没有概念哪个好。
还有孟德斯鸠Montesquieu的罗马盛衰原因论：

这个也是中英文都有。但是主要是政治哲学的东西，如果对那个时候古典主义没有背
景了解，会觉得比较枯燥的。

都没有什么区别，可能就是同一个词，但与骆驼有关的名字就非常多，比如骆驼的肉，
骆驼的毛都有专门的名词。中东那种干旱的沙漠气候使然吧。
在我们汉语的语汇中，伦理辈分的名词非常多而详细，舅舅舅母，姨父姨母，姑夫姑母
，伯父伯母，岳父岳母，哥哥姐姐，弟弟妹妹，长幼尊卑那是非常清楚的，但在英语中
，brother就包括了哥哥弟弟，但至于是哥哥还是弟弟，就只能加上elder和younger才
能区别开。中华文明的伦理秩序使然。
正是在一个民族的“语言”中凝聚着这个民族认识的全部成果，文化的全部结晶，因而
“语言”成为这个民族历史文化的“水库”。如果仔细回味一下我们的汉语，就不难发
现孔孟老庄、先秦诸子、太史公的伟大贡献。中华的文明、哲学、智慧和历史就浓缩在
我们的汉语中。
人的观念是内在的，而人的语言则是可以表达的，因而观念必须以语言的形式而确定为
思想，也就是说语言是思想的寓所。不仅如此，人的思维还必须以语言的方式实现对世
界的把握、理解和描述，因而又可以说语言是世界的寓所。更为重要的是，人的观念必

垦土地，栽培谷物和果树，而以前的Numidia人是典型的游牧民族，是不会耕种的；兴
建城市，发展商业，加强与地中海沿岸各地的贸易，出口大麦、小麦、水果等农产品和
兽皮，马匹，羊毛，同时参与过境的象牙，宝石贸易；筹措资金建立强大军队。
Numidia逐渐成为北非强国。

一 引 言
中国的政治传统中一向弥漫着一层反智的气氛；我们如果用“自古已然，于今为烈
”这句成语来形容它，真是再恰当不过了。但是首先我们要说明什么叫做“反智”。
“反智论”是译自英文的anti-intellectualism，也可以译做“反智识主义”。“
反智论”并非一种学说、一套理论，而是一种态度；这种态度在文化的各方面都有痕迹
可寻，并不限于政治的领域。中国虽然没有“反智论”这个名词，但“反智”的现象则
一直是存在的。因为这个现象可以说普遍地存在于一切文化之中，中国自然不是例外。
