haven't heard anything from them.

面过一个排名20几医学院，那个系大概10来名的样子。里面的一个committee明确跟我
说他们不会选the best。
我觉得跟她们聊得很好，最后exit meeting的时候系头就跟我说他已经收到很多
enthusiastic feedback了，另一个系的头在我回家之前就跟我的一个合作人说会帮我
reach a good decision。一个HHMI信里也说looking forward to seeing you again
soon。
现在面试都完了一个月了，啥动静都没有。
我觉得有些学校招人offer会有waitinglist, 所以他们可以先给最好的，然后给第二的
；有些学校可能没有waitinglist,所以他们可能先给最可能来的。

if you are in bio-related field, >5 years of postdoc is almost fatal.
so if you have more than 5 years of postdoc experience, you should try to
move onto a higher rank, such as RAP or other faculty position.
RAP is neither a teaching position, nor tenured-track.

我的一个R01（A1)，一个多月前拿到的分数（12 percentile)，本来挺高兴的，以为很
有希望能拿到（NIMH2012年的funding line 是15 percentile）。
最近刚拿到summary statement，一共4个reviewers，三个都很positive，小项分数都
在1-2之间，只有一个小项给了3，还有一个reviewer纯属傻逼，提了一堆驴唇不对马嘴
的意见，给的分数也很低（3-5），可笑的是有一个comment是批评（另外3个reviewer
认为）这个grant最strong的地方。本来打算在rebuttal letter里想直接ignore他的
comments，但跟PO打完电话后发现她对这个grant好像也不怎么enthusiastic，还特别
提到了这个negative reviewer，问我怎么address他的comments，晕，聊了一个多小时
，好像态度有所好转，让我在4周内把response letter寄给她。
不知道为什么（也许是PO的态度）感觉很不好，觉得这个grant可以没希望了。

接近尘埃落定之前，写一点心得，既是回馈本版——在这几个月的申请、面试、协商中
在版上得到很多好的建议，也是攒一些人品，期望在AP阶段顺利、成功。
1） 找广告
不同学科开始登广告的时间不太一样。一般而言，申请人在7-8月份，甚至更早，就要
开始进行准备了。我这次准备的稍晚，大概是9月初才开始，比较紧张地赶上了一些广
告的10月1日deadline。但在这之前已经在不断进行构思，想idea，对自己进行定位。
我主要看Nature jobs，Science career，Academicjobsonline，以及Academickeys上
的广告，筛选自己合适的——“合适”二字因人而异，因家庭而异。考虑自己的文章、
目前博后/博士导师的声誉、组内以前成员的去向，确定申请学校的rank范围。就我个
人而言，考虑我和LD的生活习惯，爱好，我申请时比较注意地理位置，选择的学校大多
位于城市。

在mid december给我update hiring process。昨天search committee chair发邮件给
我说他get back to me about the hiring process。说他们还在go through一些
hiring process，说他们的faculty很enthusiastic about 我的background，说下周会
make a recommendation to the dean and hope to visiting with（不明白这个
visiting with是什么意思，talking to？） you sometime next week. 问如果我有什
么问题，可以问他。第一遍看觉得是要给我发offer了，可是细读又觉得人家没说是要
我。可是觉得如果不是要我为什么要给我发邮件呢？请版上各位帮我分析下。谢谢！

然后两人推荐信里明显更enthusiastic about其中一个，或者两人简历之间有差距（例
如一个人比另一个人多2篇top之类的）。
然后比较强的一个大家很了解，因为一般开会啊，看文章啊，什么的都有了解。所以大
致能推断第二名的水平在什么样的一个区间。
这个排第二当然不是没机会，但确实优势不大。特别是tier 2简历、文章都很好，导师
也明确说“水平极高，前所未有”的。 |

candidate，别人对你的要求就会高一些。我觉得你可以试着从下面几个方面改善一下。
1. 关于五年计划，你的回答：就是个人能评上tenure，教学上获得更多的经验，发表
更多的论文。。。这在文学创作中有个专门的名词，叫做laundry list。就是说太面面
俱到，生怕自己错过了什么。其效果就是让人觉得，你的目标就是get another job,
which is not wrong, but not enough either.
其实，这个问题抛开面试，好好问一问自己也是有意义的：我倒底理想是做什么？先不
管能不能实现。我们招过一个工业界多年，没paper的同事。你一问他，就知道对方目
标特别明确：他经营医疗器械多年，就是想引进robotics进来。非常非常明确，非常热
情。我就是要做这个！相反，我们遇见过想要一个job用力过猛的类型：我既能干这个
，又能干这个。我可以和你合作，也可以和他合作。。。We didn't see a person

现在我讲第二部分,就是针对你们的情况，谈谈如何面对回国的一些具体而实际的问题
。你们当中很多人一定经常在问自己，what should I do？即使现在不打算马上回国，
我应该做什么？做些什么准备？
先讲一个小故事。我刚来美国的时候，有一件事情，给我印象深刻，影响深远。加州大
学伯克利分校的校长田长霖来纽约，在亚洲协会作了一个演讲，非常精彩。概括起来，
他给中国留学生说了两句话，第一句话是，be an American。就是学做一个美国人。这
其实是不太容易的。大多数的中国留学生，在美国吃的是中国饭，看中国报纸，有人还
看中国电视，现在是读中文网站。他们的朋友99%是中国人。那你为什么还要来美国？
比如在纽约的马路上有很多报亭，有各种各样的杂志，有时尚的，运动的，旅游的，新
闻的，等等。拿起一本People杂志，要是你能把它从头到尾读一遍，都能读懂了解，那
