LZ应该联合几个邻居，给utility company施加点压力，这种公司都有专门的soil
engineer或者geologist。我有个朋友住在山上，上山的路上有点滑坡，也是路中间出
现一个sink hole, 因为煤气管道从路面下通过，结果是煤气公司免费给修了。
不建议自己挖坑，很多地方是要permit的，你要是碰到了utility的管路，小心出事。 |

本来想3万刀修个900SQ FEET的小破房的FOUDATION足够了，结果2万把下面挖开，
尼玛先是挖出了泉水，STRUCTURE ENIGEER看了两次搞了个DRAFT，要去2千
市政府申请PERMIT，说来看两次也要3千，还有GEOLOGIST SURVEY 5千，
这还不够，CITY又说是HISTORIC的房子，要来检查一千块，这还不算，要10天
才能来看，一个要坍塌的小黑房，居然还压的HISTORIC，平时收税的时候怎么
不来REVIEW啊，收了钱去都败掉了，搞到月底还没开工，至少再加3万才能修好
这些ENIGEER GEOLOGIEST, CITY都是些骗子，弄来弄去，什么玩意也没搞出来
就是下面垫几个水泥块而已，快搞破产了。 |

石油行业最大的一个特点就是uncertainty，P90是尽最大可能排除uncertainty的结果
。公司的勘探和开发战略也都是基于它制定。
P90的确是动态的，所以才需要定期向SEC披露。经济和技术成熟度是区分P90与P50/P10
的两个主要指标。例如shale，在十年前是不可能算作P90的，现在不少上市公司的P90
全是shale，像Continental, Whiting, OASIS, EOG等。
发现新的油田，或者收购、变卖了油田资产，P90都会变化。油公司的exploration
geologists的任务就是发现新的油气储量从而增加P90，所以他们的技术储备和专业水
准对公司前景也有至关重要的作用。

越窄怕什么，最主要所在的行业吃住大势。有没有想过如果油价上200对你的位子有什
么影响？石油的问题不是5年、10年能解决的，你对Hubbert peak肯定不陌生。
Oracle的位子很一般，没什么特别前景。 |

There are already so many developers in silicon valley. How much better or
luckier do you think you are comparing to them? Not to say this is in a
field you are not familiar with, and Oracle is such a boring place.
If you want to go Quant, go directly. Oracle experience will not help you on that at all, and it might even hurt. |

该选休斯敦的Offer。休斯敦的Geologist是主流，在那里就业前景好，收入增长也很快
，我不少做这个方向的朋友从业几年年收入都有10来万，硅公硅婆如果不碰上IPO的机
会，最多也就这个数，考虑到州税，房价以及消费水平的差异，最后可支配收入可差远
了去了。休斯敦天气及Outdoor确实不如湾区好，但除此之外，生活的其他方面如住房
，购物，交通，学区等等都比湾区好。那里的生活都很Lay back，Work和Life非常
Balance :) 很多石油大公司福利很好，还有Pension。
其实你自己查一查最近人口普查的数据，看看两地最近人口增长的趋势，你自己就能很
快得出结论了。 |

If that is the case, honestly, I do not think you are a good fit for that
position. This type of small oil company needs someone with correct
experience and is willing to pay for it. However, lowering too much you
asking salary is actually going to hurt your chance. I think you need to ask
for at least 160k base and do good with you interview and present yourself
as seasoned petroleum geologist. Good luck. |

首先声明，我不是学油工专业的，我是码工，但是由于本人学校比较特殊，我认识的所
有中国同学，里面大概有一般都是geophysics, geology and petro engineering的，
从我来美国，我亲眼见证了他们怎么一个个的去的大石油公司，而且并不怎么费力(至
少提前半年锁定offer，而且phd期间summer intern很容易就搞到，实习工资在texas
6k-9k不等，当然这个和他们phd做的项目都是大石油公司sponsor有关)。
毕业后，他们(PHD)大多从事的职位是geophysical scientist, geologist, petro

油公司的划分一般是这样，先是两大块：
earth science和engineering
在earth science干活的一般叫做earth scientist，在engineering干活的一般就是
petroleum engineer。
earth science的重点是exploration，就是找油，同时也对成熟油田的开发提供地质和
地球物理方面的支持。earth science里面的主要职位是geologist,geophysicist，就
是地质和地球物理两大块。
engineering主要负责油田的开发，重点在production和development。petroleum
engineer是一个非常笼统的称呼，一般可以分为drilling engineer,production
engineer,completion engineer和reservoir engineer几个职位。
再说到petrophysicist，主要是做log和core分析的，很多公司是放在earth science里
