- If you talk about internal medicine don't apply for both at the same place
. Preliminary medicine is designed for other advanced programs. So the IM
categorical programs may think you just use them as backup.
- Just change a few sentences from the categorical PS.
- Try to get into a categorical program, although no guarantee. yf did this
in last year's match. |

which programs for prelim and which ones for categorical?

1. My first instinct is:
community hospitals for prelim and university or university-affiliated
hospitals for categorical?
Any comments on that?
2. Do I need to apply for prelim now or should I wait to apply till I have
info from the advanced programs I'm applying?

马上interview season就要开始了。刚开始肯定觉得各种call和专业术语眼花缭乱，而
且很多人都不知道要问什么问题，或者要注意什么东西。有人说要问一下on call
schedule during IV。虽然我当时并没有觉得很重要，但是面试的时候还是稍微留心一
下，可以成为比较各个医院的标准之一。
1. traditional long call：就是传统的30小时call,就是从7点到第二天中午12点。再
这期间管病人，收病人。每个地方的cap 都不一样。cap就是最多收多少，有的地方没
有cap. go imagine
2. long call: 一般是早7点到晚8点，有的地方到9点。通常只在5点之后收病人，因为
白天有很多resident team,一般大家都分摊了，不至于让你一个人收。但周末除外。
3. Night float: 就是有一组resident/intern晚上8／9点到第二天7点。负责cover病
人，加收病人。还有就是有无cap。
4. short call：一般是周末cross cover同组另外一个intern的病人。一般会有
reside |

下面是我和PD的面试经历，和APD的面试经历大同小异，这里就不另外写了。在我的所有面试中，没有任何人问及我medical question。我prematch的program， Chair, PD，APD，two chief residents，PC都仔细看了我的CV，陪我吃晚饭和中饭的PGY1，PGY3也看了。从他们的表情中我可以看出他们impressed by 我来美十年瞎折腾的经历。我的经历其实是我的弱项，因为我不专心，3几年之内必换个地方，专业也换了。也许是我的经历吸引了PD们的眼球吧，也有了更多的谈资，同时也因为我的LOR很strong，给我写信的4个physicians都与我有学业或工作上的联系，在工作中我总是认真对待他们的每一个request，而且总是给出alternative solution to facilitate their research or help them to better follow up their patients。到这个program面试前几天，我的一个LOR还没有 |

继续开始我的面经，不过时隔几月，只能写些模糊的印记和对pg大体的感受，以points
列出，请大家见谅。
String的IM面试8：Lincoln Medical Center（NY）
1. 他们的strategy是只发一波面试，600个左右，只走match，好像有将近30个
slots。有人说只要最后参加match的candidates都会被rank，但是没有证实。
2. 整体印象比想象中的好。医院很大，设备新， electronic system着实省事。但
地理位置South Bronx，不太安全。
3. 上，下午两场面试，每人都见pd和另一个faculty member，有的被问medical
question。Pd会问父母做什么的，其他都是typical问题。
4. 累，但是还有小小的人性化成分，tour的PGY-3说从不踢人，如果有什么事情不
能完成一年的培训，保留位置第二年继续。
5. 没有inhouse fellowship, 不能出去做ele |

1. 在黑人区，医院里从medical students到chair清一色都是African American。因为是university program, 记得fellow placement比较高，但是刚才check他们的资料没有找到这项。
2. workload不小，也比较malignant。
3. 当天去了20来个，一个白gg面prelim，几个老印，剩下都是黑皮肤的。我是被一个hem/onc女医生面的，typical问题。那天碰到了面第一家的面友—一个尼日利亚mm，她很想来这儿因为离家近，但是出来后跟我complain这是她见过的最差面试，因为她们三个一组的mm同时被一个attending面了，据说那个attending手里拿着该填的表，逐一问过去: xx, what’s your weakness? Yy, what’s yours? Zz, how about you? 我听完mm的叙述，加之我的所见所感，
这家医院在我list上掉落到了im的倒数。

above tasks, you don't need to do the internship any more.:)
pick something that really worries you, looks like you really worry about
the name of medications, but actually once you start working, you will find
the medications frequently used in your IM intern year will be no more than
30.
i think doing an inpatient observation in your future hospital is the most
helpful way to get an idea. |

再有就是再复习一下CS，以前是为了应付考试，现在是真的要上阵了。然后练习CASE
PRESENTATION。 match 结果下来以前我在复习step 3, 我还没考STEP 3， 但他们觉得
不要现在着急马上考了，因为没有上临床，考好了很不容易，成绩不好会或多或少的影
响fellowship 的申请。我也准备提前去医院里先混个脸熟去。 |

0. 0.1 Basic rule1: be ambitious but also be practical, hehe.
0.2 Basic rule2: pick something that really worries you.
1. 好好享受最后的日子，多陪陪家人。
2. 好好放松加好好提高EQ:)
3. Intership开始以后你就知道睡觉不够是最大的问题。现在睡足可以至少扛一个
月。
4. 读书 + 听书
5. 练习英语， 说 第一印象很重要。
6. 然后练习 CASE PRESENTATION。
7. 复习一下CS，以前是为了应付考试，现在是真的要上阵了。
8. 让chief给你安排个好senior, 第一个月好senior能让你顺利过度，不好的
会让你痛不欲生。

象偶10年以上，no phd, no paper, no research,真的是等馅饼啊，大的小的都欢迎啊
。至今拿到一个IM IV, 就是那个人人都拿到的richmond，朋友说这个我基本没戏，因
为这么多中国人他们就要1个，顶多2个，所以你要够牛才会拿到offer. 拿到IV是不够

they may not tell you. My experience is that PC will tell you who will
interview you if this is a pathology program. If it is IM, they propably won
't tell you because they do not know yet who is available to interview you
on that day or they do not have time to email you. Of course, the PD will
propably interview you. |
