After installation, I opened Service Manager, set Server as my local machine.
However, the ListBox for Services is blank, even if clicking the 'Refresh
Services...' button. What might be the problem? Thanks in advance! |

PII300 384MB machine with Cable modem connection.
So the speed will be even faster if put this baby on professional hosting
service.
As to the software, ASP.NET / MSDE is free. :-)
(SQL MSDE == SQL 2k for databases under 2G).
By the way, I am planning to expand the website, but don't know what to do
with it. Any good ideas?

If you are using VB/ADO/COM to develop your program, you can try SQL Server
Developer's Edition or MSDE, both of which can be installed on Win2k Pro.
MSDE comes free with VC++6.0 or VB 6.0

purpose, research or commercial) - and you can even
redistribute it free!
However, since you already have SQL2000, that's even
better:) Give it a shot for the XML support and advanced
data mining feature. I haven't tried data mining but my
friend working in Creative said it's awesome!
In my opinion, if you want your db server to be NT based,
you'll want SQLServer Family; if on Linux, many people uses
MySql. |

to use, but it doesn't support stored procedures and transactions.
For a sql server with more functionalities look for postgresql which
also comes with linux. pretty good too.
For a standalone sql server on windows also try MSDE package, which
is just a stripped down version of MSSQL. It doesn't have administration
tools but is freely distributable.
As for books the on-line help file (MSSQL boosk) installed with mssql7 are

第一次发贴，不知这里的规矩，有冒犯的地方，请多包涵。
本人是非IT人士，但一直喜欢倒腾点网站设计。最近在做一个基于Web的“质粒”库（分
子生物学用）。考虑到访问量很小，打算用一台WindowsXP professional做服务器，前端
是ASP.NET，中间层是C#写的预编译的组件，后端数据库是MSDE。
以前也做过C#的程序，但昨天晚上在Session处理上出现了一个问题：在一个页面存储的S
ession变量，Response. Redirect到另一个页面就无法调用，显示Session[“变量名”]
对象为空。仔细一试，发现每次Request同一个页面（Refresh浏览器）都获得一个新的Se
ssionID。显然Session State没有存储。
以前也使用Inproc模式存储变量，并没有出过这样的问题。多次试验失败后认为是.NET的
问题，上google查，发现IE
SP1中有个补丁，使机器名含有特殊字符的服务器无法写入cookie。而.NET默认配置Cooki
eless=false。就是说必须要写cookie |
