我想讲一讲中国人传统的的孝文化与西方文化的碰撞。当然虐待老人是另外一回事，不在本文讨论之列。
1。从“孝”字谈起
“孝”字，上边一个老字的上半边，下边是一个孩子的子，意思是，老来有子，老来靠子，老人和孩子在一起生活，孩子要奉养老人，等等一些意思。
中国人的孝，主要意思是指，从《孝经》流传下来的孝。例如： “身体发肤，受之父母，不敢毁伤，孝之始也。立身行道，扬名于后世，以显父母，孝之终也。夫孝，始于事亲，中于事君，终于立身”。并按照父亲的生老病死等生命过程，提出“孝”的具体要求：“居则致其敬，养则致其乐，病则致其忧，丧则致其哀，祭则致其严”。
所以中国人讲的“孝”，比较倾向于把父母的利益当作自己至高无上的生活准则，为他们而生，按他们的意愿而生。因此才有：“父母在不远行”，这样的子女生活准则。
比较流行的孝是指，我一把屎一把尿的把你养大了，你得听我的，你得顺从我，你得养活我，你得给我养老送终。
孝字翻成英文是什么？是“filially piety,” 再翻回中文 |

孔子其实根本不是一个philosopher，而是一个sophist(一种收取学费教导别人道德的
人)。他不关心道德的本质、道德和人的关系这些meta-ethics以及Normative ethics的
问题，仅仅关注Applied ethics范畴里某些事物；即使是对于这些实际问题，他一般也
只给答案、不给深层原因(也许他从来没思考过)；更糟的是他坚持自己的答案是真理，
反对者为禽兽。。。
例如研究“虔诚”(piety/敬鬼神)：苏格拉底的第一反应是反问所有虔诚行为的共性是
什么、鬼神和灵魂/肉体的关系是什么。。。别人/自己给的答案最后发现自相矛盾不要
紧，不断修改就是。。。这是典型的philosopher的思路。
而孔子上来就直接给他的答案，而且是当真理给，这是典型的sophist的做法。事实上
，于丹的角色也是一个sophist。

Lindberg。发现很多细节以前滑过去了。
思考人类文明、东方西方对比，有一个说不清楚的问题：
1)如果满族不入关、如果东西方始终不接触、如果。。。东方是否也能独立发展出现代
文明。或者更感情化的一个问题：东方文明是否“根本上”劣于、优于、或者等同于西
方文明？
以及一个更说不清楚的问题：
2)假设东方独立发展出了现代文明，这个文明是否一定和现代的西方文明类似；或者说
，人类现代文明是否可能有完全不同的、然而同样甚至更加强盛有生命力的形态？
这两个问题很难说是历史问题，也许连哲学问题都算不上，只能说是信仰问题，所以无
法理性讨论、讨论也绝对没有结果。
如果不考虑上两个复杂的问题，只是想知道：
3)现代西方文明最终能够被发展出来的起源在哪里？或者问：为什么17-19世纪欧洲诞
生了现代西方文明？或者问：为什么17-19世纪东方没有诞生现代(西方)文明？
那么答案就相对清楚得多。按我个人的理解：

发帖数: 3006 | 43 Sophists并没有哲学思想，严格而言不算哲学家。我不太清楚“推翻真理”是什么意思
(逻辑学？认知学？)。苏格拉底虽然也涉及逻辑和认知，但是最关心的是规范学。
举个例子。前段时间本版讨论“孝”。孔子对这个重要概念给了很多讨论：生事之以礼
死葬之以礼；父母唯其疾之忧；不敬何以别乎。。。孔子显然认为自己是了解“孝”的
真理的，以指导者的身分告诉别人如何定义“孝”。将来孔门弟子把孔子供奉起来，两
千年都在他思考的框架下添砖加瓦修修补补，这不是后人的错，是孔子(以及同时代绝
大部分东方和西方先哲)的思维定式决定的。
苏格拉底不关心对祖先之“孝”，但是关心对神之“虔”(piety)。孔子对“孝”的观
点，苏格拉底在各个层次对“虔”也有类似思考。例如按时祭祀(礼)是不是“虔”；心
里对神尊重(敬)是不是“虔”。。。还进一步地探讨“虔”究竟应该由谁来裁决：是自
己、还是神、还是众人(对比孔子，孔子从来默认父母是“孝”的裁决者)；更进一步，
探讨定义“虔”的方法论：所有“虔”之行为的共同特点之抽象(孔子从来没有试图讨
论这个层次的概念)。。。
