There are many investment options, with different risk and return. I don't
think those 401k/403b even allow you to trade stocks. Those things you buy
are mutual funds. And there are professonals who manage the fund that makes
decision with the trading (mostly long term, you can tell from the
prospectus). Surely, there is still risk of losing money but you have some

本人在一health care领域的phd program已经2.5年，2014fall即将开始第三年的第二
学期。其实我对目前导师（白人）的研究方向一点兴趣都没有，中途试过转学去其他学
校跟其他老师做我痴迷的方向(对那个方向已经很obsessed了，可以这样说)，被录取但
是不能提供ta 或ra，而且目前学校的给我学费全免＋competitive monthly stipend。
这2.5年来我一直很郁闷，因为我和一个压根不喜欢的研究方向在一起，同时我也背着
导师去参加我喜欢那个方向的会议、培训等，还背地里看大量的文献、书籍，广接人缘
，目前自己在暗地里working on a manuscript in that field to submit to a
journal (综述性质)，同时也很消极和被动地完成目前老板交给的任务，他也看出来我
不是highly motivated。
最近我越发地感觉我不能这样不闻不问自己应该做的事情，而“花心”地背着老师痴迷
于自己喜欢的领域，因为最终我得拿现在老板的推荐信去找目前方向相关的工作。于是

their fees are much higher for other transactions. You can buy a lot of
other stuff with Etrade, but if you want to buy Vanguard mutual funds in a
Etrade account, you probably need to pay a fee. You don't need to pay a fee
if you buy Vanguard funds from a Vanguard account.

the reverse convertible? My guess is this note has a step cpn which either
step up or down after certain period. You have to rely on the prospectus for
this. As to the Option premium, the bank may sell some options embeded with
notes and that option premium is none fixed based on market condition. |

EM bond IMHO is to get a tempered way to gain EM exposure, I do not treat it
as bond but equity.
Tim, since you own PFUIX I have a question for you. it is only for the employer's match.
Some employer retirement plans have provisions for you to do a 401k rollover
on some of the assets while you are still employed by the employer, but you
’ll need to check with your employer to see if they allow it, and what
penalties may be associated with it. Most 401k prospectuses and companies in
general don’t make this common knowledge to employees. |

are 1) 100 free trade per 365 days for stocks, ETFs, and TFs (NTF trades are
not counted against the 100 free trades) EACH account if your total asset

我读过了这个Prospectus，这个叫callable notes,Chase 决定什么时候买回。行情好
，他们会在每三个月决定要不要call. 如果call了，就只给三个月的利息 2.5%*
quarter 数。
如果不call,等到一年期的时候，只要一年间没有任何一个index跌倒过40%以上，就保
证10% 利息加本金。不能续约。一年就完。
我是从一个FA那里知道的，他推荐的，觉得风险不高，可以试试。但是只在每个月底出
来，过了时间就没了。
10-12%是到手的net return。所有的费用都除掉以后的利息。

funds that have information on Morningstar, yahoo finance, those
information are very limited. There is only one public fund I can choose-
pimco tot return, all others are unit trusts very few choices, 2 for bond
category, 9 for stocks ... While they do offer some target date funds
however their performance are just so so...
Seems like I have to "pick tall from several short ones" ...
