美国人是“模范族裔”。这种看法看似褒奖，但对于许多华裔来说，这是一个极具攻击
性的标签，是他们几十年来一直试图摆脱的身份。
什么是“模范族裔”？
据《美国之音》报道，在以前的调查报告中，美国人对华裔美国人的普遍态度是：华裔
“受过良好教育、有强烈的家庭观念，勤劳、智慧，比其他族裔犯罪率低”。该结论出

1865年1月底，中太平洋铁路局四大掌门人("Big Four")之一，总负责人Charles
Crocker与施工总监James H. Strobridge面谈，让他尝试雇佣华工。Strobridge是爱尔
兰人，他的第一反应是轻蔑和气愤。在几乎所有白人眼里，华人形象负面居多，他自然
不屑于当华人的老板，让身板矮小的华工肩挑铁路重担更令他难以想象。Crocker说服
他的理由是曾有过大约20华工修土路，而且干活不错（土路指的是Dutch Flat and
Donner Lake Wagon Road，简称DFDLWR，历史古道）。
Strobridge没有别的办法，极不情愿的到附近的Auburn镇，从那里已不再景气的金矿上

这一万名劳工都来自中国广东，要先做5年苦力偿还蛇头费，有点类似福建偷渡客，但
他们的命运连黑奴都不如，美国南方的黑奴还可以成家，还可以有小孩，而这些广东农
民来美后长年做苦力，不会说英文，没有家，没有任何财产，死后连葬身之地都没有！

这些做苦力的华人死后不允许被埋在公墓里，只好埋在旁边的荒地。
此事被媒体揭露后，我一直在想一个问题，那就是当时的《洛杉矶时报》有没有报道过
这些华工？如果有，那又是怎样报道的？这么老的资料很难查到，想不到《洛杉矶时报
》自己的记者从资料库中挖出来了—《洛杉矶时报》昨天有篇报道说，该报1887年的报
道称中国人是“天生的小偷的恶棍”！
（真是岂有此理！但回想一下1887年该报主编的政治立场就不奇怪了。）
有人说媒体记载历史，但带有偏见的报道只会弯曲历史。值得欣慰的是同一个媒体纠正
了自己的历史错误，并为华人在历史上遭到的不公正待遇提出了控诉，感人至深。

the last passenger train run by the Union pacific company was around 1971.
so I don't fault people nowadays who don't know the past.
back in old days. before there was AMTRAK
Union Pacific was running most passengers rails out west and from north to
