It is set in uboot so should be used by uboot to pass to the kernel.
Use a newer uboot and kernel should make it boot on sata.
I have tried on pogo v4 and it boot from all three source: usb, mmc, and
sata.
My way is different from debian forum becase I think it is easier and
confirmed by your experience too.
Here is my uboot env for pogo v4. I shared it here for the same reason.

传统gps只支持serial口输出，win8开始gps跟鼠标一样改成HID协议，
目前貌似没人写serial转hid的驱动
所以你用蓝牙转接的话，可以用legacy的软件（比如Microsoft streets and maps),
但是新的Microsoft map不支持serial GNNS data |

再follow up 一个问题。也是我看不惯的一种做法。
你们往数据库里写的时候，会经常把比较复杂的data 写进一个class object，然后
serialize 进数据库吗？我通常不喜欢这么做，如果需要，也就是把数据放进map这类
collection里面serialize 进数据库。如果里面再复杂点，最多就是collection 里面
的element是个class。
如果把数据先写进一个巨复杂的object里面，然后再把这个object serialize 进数据
库，那一旦后面需要更改这个object的结构，之前存进去的数据做deserialize就会出
问题。 |

device, CDC + Mass Storage Device。用Atmel的源程序在IAR上直接可以编译和debug
，但是有一个问题，当Windows显示了Virtual serial port 和 mass storage device
以后，我safely remove hardware，stop了mass storage device，然后，拔掉USB
cable。过一会我再插上USB cable，想让Windows再次找到composite device并且正常
工作，Windows的Device Manager中确实又出现了composite device和virtual serial
port，以及mass storage device。但是mass storage device 处出现黄色的问号，并
显示，device can not start (code 10)。而且这时virtual serial port也不能工作。
