We have a single continuous predictor x from some uniform distribution and a
response variable EY = b0 + b1*x. Instead of ranking x into bins, we round
x to w, which is usually assumed in real situations where exact measurement
is difficult.

b) we estimate d1-hat from EY = d0 + d1 * w

=> f(x) = g(x)
w/o noticing a,b=0 is possible. i.e. division by zero leads to wrong result.
I learned this is a mistake in junior high school algebra, if not earlier. Maybe your high school didn't teach this, or you were never good at math. That doesn't change the fact that this is a basic, simple mistake in math. |
