遇到这本中学生读物前已经好久没有投缘的书进账了。Gandhi：Fighter without a
Sword是儿子从学校的免费书堆里淘回来的，书页枯黄如古籍状。书于1950年出版–那
时甘地被刺刚刚两年–次年获得美国少年图书最高奖的「银牌」Newbury Honor。作者
是美国颇有名气的儿童读物作家Jeanette Eaton。看来这书在美国读者不少–儿子拿到
的这本是1970年第十四次印刷。儿子读了书，写进读书日志里。老师在日志的Gandhi一

1，何时加逗号？
当句子中有and或者but连接两个从句时，何时加逗号？我的感觉是大多数人觉得句子太
长就加逗号，短就不加。其实应该是，如果两个从句都有独立主语，就该加，否则多长
都不该加。比如：
“I always close the door, but I rarely lock it.”
“I find it distracting to leave the door open with all the noise in the
hallway and thus always close it.”

最近实在沮丧，招了个学生，1年多了还不如我本科生出的活，关键是态度，做什么都
敷衍了事，别说做学术了，就写一段话不到100 words都spelling errors超过5个，连
基本的check spelling都不做就丢给我。而且记性巨差，动不动就是“我忘了”。而且
还马虎。我简直不知道每天此人在干嘛，谈话都谈了一年多了，好话都说了无数次，每
次都是是是，样子还是老样子。

面试。本人的背景是三流学校physics MS+PhD + statistics MS，有过一些C/C++编程
经验，但都是靠兴趣和自学。所以我想问问版上的前辈们应该如何准备。
下面是电面经验：
电面约的是45分钟，但公司那边因为技术原因推迟了15分钟，所以只面试了半个小时，
感觉有点赶时间。上来就问了有什么C/C++的经验，答曰大部分经验均源于自学，用过
Java写过一些Monte Carlo模拟作业，用过C++写过一个小程序控制步进电机，自己都觉
得没有底气。
本来预计会有一些C/C++的概念问题，没料到接下来就问知道什么数据结构。答曰
Linked list，stack，queue，还有一点点tree的咚咚。接下来就是几个关于数据结构
的问题，诸如如何用stack去实现psudo queue，如何用数据结构实现text processing
w/ spell check with a library，如何才能实现efficient的spell check（答曰使用

In the first one or two years for a young student, it is not required to
spell out each key for the corresponding note. However, when the little one
starts to learn the piano/music theories on top of playing the instrument,
it would be beneficial for him or her to be able to spell out the keys while
reading the notes on the score sheet. Not the whole sheet. But the areas
to which he or she needs to pay attention. |

坏的标准是什么？
我之所以修改教案，之所以花那么长的时间和儿子对话讨论，就是因为这个好与坏的标
准太难定了。 首先来说，写作的目的不同，当然评判的标准不同。其次来讲，挑毛病
总比创作本身来得容易。（所以这个世界上剧评家的数目超过了剧作家。）
既然前面的铺垫工作已经做了，我这次给儿子恶补的重点以及相应的标准现在就比较狭
隘和明确是：以读者的角度来评判， 他和我分别写的这段话是否ｗｏｒｋ？ 也就是
说撇开个人恩怨，如果你是一个ｖｏｔｅｒ， 你读了这个人写的这段话， 会不会ｖ
ｏｔｅ ｆｏｒ ｈｉｍ／ｈｅｒ？ 如果会，为什么？如果不会， 又为什么？
标准是狭隘的，但背后的基本原则我觉得还是很有普遍性的：写东西之前，最好先明确
一下这个好与坏的标准。而通常情况下，这个标准都是和ａｕｄｉｅｎｃｅ有关。所以
在彼此评判的过程中，我已经暗暗埋伏下我想给儿子强化的ｗｒｉｔｉｎｇ ＡＢＣ的

孩子写了不少，没几个词拼对的。ICECREAM 写的是ISCRIM. TREE写的是TRIE.不过两
三句话也都能读下来。 随后俺很不好意思，说没给孩子加强SPELLING的练习，平时看
书他这些词都认识的，应该会写啊。。。结果老师很严肃的告诉俺，他认为已经很好了
