大学毕业以后,我顺利地拿到一个PhD program的offer,到了美国读书。在美国的日子
是既忙碌又寂寞,忙碌的是白天,寂寞的是晚上。
我很少去参加中国学生会的活动,除了上课,TA,就是去GYM跑步和瑜伽。晚上和周末通
常宅在家里上网,时间长了,在BBS某个版跟一些ID混得很熟,也加了其中ID的MSN。其
中一个就是G。
他是和我一个专业的faculty,我一般称他为"X老师"(X是他的姓)。虽然他已经是
assistant professor,但没比我大很多,因为他读书早,加上一路很顺,本科四年博士
四年毕业就faculty了。是在一个top school读的博士。
我一直喜欢smart的男生,刚开始对他是很崇拜,他总指点我,在专业上。他MSN上的时
间不多,一天半个小时到一个小时,但只要看到我在线,都会主动跟我几句,问我,"今
天好吗","周末过得怎么样"。有时我更新了blog,或者上传了照片,他都会在MSN评论
一下。但他从不会直接在我blog或者照片后留言,他很谨慎,也很少提他自己的事。

如今旧书是不讲价的啦,上网用ISBN一search,找到最低价,鼠标点几下,几天之后就
到手了。要是玩高雅,玩所谓的孤本善本,没有关系,雇一个agent,环游世界也能跟
你找出来。要是有主不卖,拿银子砸死他!
说真的,书就是商品,没有什么特殊。知不知道书店把卖不出去的书的皮拆下来退给批
发商,拿回refund(都是100%的refund),然后把书瓤仍掉。这样省了运费,反正卖不
出去的书就是废纸。这也就是书上警告不要买无皮书的原因,因为这样出版商一分钱也
赚不到,没有书皮的书已经被注销了价值。
对于书的unhealthy attachment是病态的,呵呵。

just as I did with her other books. Absolutely agree on what you said about
not being able to skip chapters. She creates so many characters, and so
effectively that I have actually come to care about them.

Yeah, I think we are already doing too much of respect, love, consideration,
etc. toward other people.
I guess you could try to educate other people to do this first, tell them
that we need space to survive and thrive. If you can't do that with your
nice and gentle and vulnerable mind, we will educate them to show some
respect in our own way, which can't be good.

I second this and would highly suggest you find another lab.
The atmosphere in this group is not healthy. And problem like this generally
seeds from lacking proper managerial skills of the top, meaning: you can do
nothing and may only take heat. As a rotation student you have a long way
to go to get to the PhD level and during this process you need lots of
SINCERE help from your colleagues, which i just don't see it happen in this
group.

自己没有successful的薄厚,就推断薄厚生活unhealthy,就推测90%的教授。。,好
像自己的例子代表了整个学术界似的,在自以为是了。
自己连续跟3个导师都没有处好,就推断别人都是靠科爹上位,好像人家都要象你一样
先把关系搞僵,否则成功也不算数。
天天在这乞求廉价的怜悯,说些不中听的话,就人家没有同情心。就你这一点点情商,
还是闭嘴的好。

at least in my institution who is way over-paid for doing almost NOTHING).
He also teaches a grant writing class, but the funny thing is he has never
successfully received an R01 ever! In my formal lab, my PI don't pressure
post-docs at all. I worked longer hours than almost all of them (most of
them are 9-5 including post-doc from China; I'm more of an ABC since I was

I think LZ has raised an important point: that for cancer patients in
advanced stage or old and unhealthy, chemo is not the best way to extend one
's life.
This is a possibility that chinese medicine may extend patient life longer
than doing chemo with less side effects. For many, quality of life is more
important than length of life. We need to think about that when considering
treatment options.

Sarcastic enough, as physicians or physician in training, we counsel
patients about healthy lifestyle and how important it is. However, our own
lifestyle is completely unhealthy and even detrimental to our health. Junk
food, irregular work/sleep hour, interruption of sleep and serious lack of
sleep, high level of stress, etc.
I am not complaining. I love what I am doing, and respect my own choice. It
