对一半的孩子来说,平均智商就是一个进步。即使是在80%的智商水平
(假设智力可以量化的话),谁不愿意降个30%,换来所有人的仰慕和热

为什么真实的世界对nerds们比较友好呢?表面上看来,似乎是因为
真实的世界里的住的是大人,已经成熟了,不会再互相找茬了。但是
我觉得并非如此。监狱里住的也是大人,他们可没少互相掐架。还有
主妇们形成的小团体显然也是如此;在曼哈顿的一些地区,女人们的
生活看上去就象高中的延续,具有同样琐碎狭隘的纠葛和心机。
我认为真实的世界最重要的地方不在于在里面生活的是成人,而在于
它非常广大,而且你做的事情会有真实的效果。这就是学校,监狱,
和一起吃午饭的女士们所缺少的。这些世界的居民被封闭在小小的气
泡里,他们无论做什么,其效果都无法逸出到气泡之外。这样的社会
会很自然地向野蛮的方向退化。形式取决于功能,但是他们没有功能。
当你做的事情会有真实的效果的时候,只会取悦别人就不够了。得到
正确答案的能力开始显得重要,这个时候nerds的优势就展现出来了。
我马上就联想到Bill Gates。他是臭名昭著地不擅社交,但是他的答案
是对的,至少从公司收入的方面来衡量是如此。
另一件真实的世界的不同之处是它十分广大。在样本足够大的情况下,

很多其他大人在我小的时候对体育才能的重视程度差不多 -- 身体健
康,体育及格就行。那样想的话,如果从体育成绩的80%percentile
掉到50%,好象确实不是什么大事。:-P |

时候我还奇怪他难道先入为主假设英国和美国中学差不多。看到很后来
才发现原来他父母跟本站的绝大部分人一样是移民到美国,而且跟很多
老中一样把孩子送进一个号称不错的学区,结果根本不是那么回事。看完

很好的学校,回过头来想也觉得初中少部分同学的行为很像animal,和

十几岁的孩子在社会里曾经有更活跃的地位。在工业化之前,他们都是
各式各样的学徒,有的在商店,有的在农庄,有的甚至在军队。大人没
有让他们建立自己的社会。他们是大人所在的社会里的初级成员。
在那时,十几岁的孩子似乎比现在更尊重大人,因为他们可以亲眼目睹
到在他们正努力学习的技能方面,大人们是多么内行。现在的大部分孩
子对父母在办公室里做的是什么基本一无所知,也看不到学校的功课和
他们成年后的工作有什么关系(事实上也确实没多少关系)。
如果说那时的十几岁的孩子更尊重大人的话,那时的大人也更需要十几
岁的孩子们为他们工作。只要训练数年,学徒就能帮很大的忙了。就算
是新来的学徒也能做送信扫地之类的事。
但是现在十几岁的孩子对大人来说没用了。他们在办公室里只会碍手碍
脚。于是他们在上班的路上把孩子们送到学校里去,就象他们在周末出
门前把家里的狗送到养狗场一样。
发生了什么呢?这里我们遇到了一个困难的问题。这个问题的起因也是
目前很多弊病的起因:社会分工的细化。随着社会分工越来越细,一个
职业需要的培训时间也越来越长。工业化之前的孩子最迟14岁就可以开

没有第一手的了解,而且很多十几岁的孩子还没办法很确切地说出自己
的感受。这种情况除了自己尽量be open以外,看看过来人怎么说的,
应该也会有些帮助。不过每个孩子的情况不同,所以也不能全信。 |

个人很赞同这个美国中学生的残忍就是无事生非吃饱了没事干闲的观点。有说法,美国
的基础教育差于其它发达国家。那个一个不拉下的目标,似乎是通过拉低优秀,而非提
高落后而实现的。当学习成了无所谓的事,孩子们总得整点有所谓的出来吧。
我也同意作者的解决之道:让孩子认识到这个popular与否真的无所谓,那都是些小孩
子的把戏,故作成熟,其实很幼稚。不少大孩子家长告诉过我,比起国内同龄人来,美
国小孩发育超前思想幼稚。虽然国内大城市小孩,也越来越美国化。
还有一点,我想国内传统的家长威严,并不是那么一无是处。

真的是很奇怪,其实我初中的同学也大多不爱学习,重点高中的升学率
基本是零的,不过大家都玩得挺高兴,不记得有谁想要特别popular或
者bully别人。但是这边好象bully是普遍现象,我们买的贝贝熊系列书还
专门有一本讲这个。莫非米国人就是比我们天朝上邦野蛮些... :-P |

过努力相对有客观标准的东西,比如爱学习的玩竞赛,爱运动的玩球类,爱文艺的玩唱
歌攒文字。即使什么也不学,大家也忙着呼朋引伴出去玩。除了一些所谓痞子,很少有
人对欺负别人有兴趣,没觉得那能带来什么满足感。
当然,这是25年前的古代情形。

。只有忙碌于真实社会,才不会太在意虚拟的校园社会。
文中说得很有道理,想想很多年前,孩子们十几岁就可以去做学徒的时候,好象没听说
什么青春期问题,现在的孩子们跟社会接触晚,太空虚了,精力无处释放,也感觉不到
自己的价值,问题就都出来了。 |
