99% V8s, including Euro's, use a crossplane crankshaft.
actually, right now the only active platplane V8 on the market is F430's 4.

(some smaller independent sports car makers, such as TVR, also have
platplane V8s. but that's beyond our question, since we're talking about the
mainstream)
Let me summarize it:
All current American V8s are crossplaned.
All current German V8s are crossplaned.
All current Japanese V8s are NOT platplaned (considering Yamaha's 60deg V8s).
All UK's V8s are crossplane

I'm not sure what you're talking about
most V8s share the same acoustic characteristic caused by uneven firing for
each bank that yeemartin described. it's not unique to American V8s.
some people may claim they can tell OHV V8s from (D)OHC V8s, but I cannot
confirm that. the difference is the unique sound made by OHV's pushrods. but
that only gets obvious when the rpm is really high, but I don't have any
chance to drive one at all, so I don't know... what I know is: around a
street corner, to me

That's such a lie! Lz you've got to try it out yourself and stop just
asking people. Adults around 5'9" no problem back there. As far as gas
mileage, it's comparable with the most efficient V8s and about the same as
other V6s, at least in the case of 135i, it generates same torque as V8s:

I don't have much experience with Euro cars. Only owned a couple of VWs and
droved a few Bimmers, MBs and some other VWs.
The reason whey they are more powerful, to my understanding is:
1: Their engine design. Although engine displacement is small, like 2.0L or
even smaller for most, as compared to a whole bunch of V6s and V8s here.
Turbos are used more widely in Euro cars. This has given them way more HP
than w/o. Example: Passat's (and other models) 2.0T FSI engine can deliver
the horse power

i drive a red XC-90 V8 Sports. Yamaha engine. no idea why Volvo does not
have its own smaller V8. even that is no longer available. They have
discontinued all V8s.
it cannot be compared to my other car, which is a V8 sedan.
but it`s good enough, so I just barely like it. no complaints.
Not sure about their current, main line of T6. I hear it's not bad.

F1 V8s are crossplaned? I don't know that. If they really are, that must be
the rule.
otherwise, I guess they'll use platplane cranks since that can make the
engine much easier to rev.

I checked it again, Chrysler first used EFI on their HEMI V8s in 1958
just a year later
so, could you give me 50% credits for this question? ^_^

How bad is F30's chassis rigidity? I drove a F30 and an A4 side by side and
F30 feels less solid than the A4 or the old E90, at that time I thought it
was the RFTs and maybe suspension tuning.
Mercedes really need a turbo/supercharge 3.0 engine... The new turbo V8s are
overkill for everyday driving, and the NA V6 or turbo inline 4 is just
adequate, there is a gap between the two.

i kinda understand the decision to replace e550 with e400. those turbo V8
are way too powerful and fuel comsumption is not so good. Those who think
turbo V6 (or a NA V8) is still not fast enough can go for the high
performance versions. Maybe Mercedes will create something between their
regular cars and AMGs? Like the S of audi or M sport of BMWs, for the
hardcore speed or status seekers.
The V8s on the mercedes sound very good though!! smooth and strong, fits the
brand well.
