Apple, Google, Microsoft are all H.264 licensee.
Now there is just another format. Apple and Microsoft may or may not support
it. But without their support this format can't go very far.
Right now I don't see any reason why Apple and Microsoft would not support
it, except they just don't want to be on Google's side.
