Flu deaths continue in California, where the total since the start of the
flu season is up to 332.
State health officials have confirmed a total of 14 new deaths since
previous data was released March 7. Seven were children. Another 19 deaths
remain under investigation.
The number of new cases continues to decline, however. There were 16 last
week, 24 the week before and 35 the week before that, according to figures
from the California Department of Public Health.
The figures remain much higher than 2013, though. By this time of year,
state health officials had reported a total 43 flu-related deaths. A total
of 106 deaths were reported in the entire 2012-13 flu season. Although times
vary, the peak of the flu season typically runs from late November through
March.
Thirty of the 332 flu deaths this season occurred in the Sacramento region.
They include two in El Dorado County, 27 in Sacramento County and 1 in Yolo
County.
Flu isn’t the only public health threat on the rise.
State health officials have confirmed 32 cases of measles in California so
far this year, up from three by this time of year in 2013. No cases have
been confirmed in the Sacramento area. | c****0
