2012 Honda Civic Plummets in Consumer Reports Ratings
The 2012 Honda Civic LX has plunged to second-to-last in a recent Consumer
Reports’ test of 12 small sedans. Overall, the new Civic dropped from a
score of 78 points (a “very good” rating) to a lowly 61 points (below“
recommendation” level). Only the similarly revamped Volkswagen Jetta scored
lower than the Civic.
“While other models like the Hyundai Elantra have gotten better after being
redesigned, the Civic has dropped so much that now it ranks near the bottom
of its category,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports
’ Auto Test Center. Testers found the 2012 Civic “less agile and with
lower interior quality than its predecessor,” according to the press
release. Ride quality, long braking distances and excessive road noise were
also criticized.
About the only bright points for the Civic was praise for its roomier rear
seat and good fuel economy. The results will be a serious blow to
engineering-led Honda, which prides itself on technical innovation and
continual model refinement. Now in its ninth generation, the Civic has been
a linchpin of the Honda lineup since it first appeared in 1972.
The 2012 Civic LX is powered by a 140-bhp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and,
when equipped in LX trim and optional 5-speed automatic, carries a sticker
price of $19,425. |
