5mm sounds on the low end. What car do you have? Look up the vehicle on
Autozone.com and then click on the specifications page. You will need a
micrometer to measure the rotor.
brake pad usage really depends on the road condition and your driving style
though it doesn't have much to do with time period. I've heard people have
the them changed at 20k ~ 60k mile interval.
