After evaluating the 2014 Lexus IS 250 and Infiniti Q50, Consumer Reports
has found that both sedans failed to meet the publication's expectations.
The Q50 was dinged for driving dynamics, but CR claims the Lexus missed the
mark in almost every category.
The model used for testing was an IS 250, since it accounts for a bulk of IS
sales. The editors also opted for all-wheel drive, which they claimed is a
"popular" option, though CR didn't purchase for the test an F Sport model.
The magazine found the Lexus to be "neither sporty nor luxurious" with
acceleration that "lacks punch." Editors were also disappointed with their
observed overall fuel economy of 21 mpg (EPA rating is 20/23/27 mpg city/
combined/highway). Furthermore, Consumer Reports found the IS 250 to have "
vague-feeling" steering, "elevated" road noise, and a cramped interior.
Editors also weren't enamored by the infotainment system and its "fussy"
mouse-like controller. In our test of an IS 250 F Sport, we achieved a 0-60
mph time of 7.2 seconds and noted that the 204-hp 2.5-liter engine pulled "
smoothly," though we kept thinking about the 306-hp IS 350. We found the
steering of the F Sport model to be direct and predictable, though the staff
is mixed when it comes to the infotainment joystick controller. The new
Infiniti Q50 sedan scored better than the Lexus IS 250, but the car is too
new to be recommended. Consumer Reports suggested the Q50 "has taken a step
back from its excellent predecessor." Although the Q50 scored a "Very Good"
in the overall road test portion, editors felt handling was mundane and it
wasn't "particularly quiet." Editors also found the dual-screen controls "
slow to respond" and said the interior overall was "nothing special."
In our First Test review of a 2014 Q50S, we found the sedan's steer-by-wire
system to be "pretty decent," but "still doesn't return the same level of
involvement or fun as the other cars." We have yet to fully test a non-S-
trimmed Q50 V-6 sedan. Japanese sedans have historically performed well in
Consumer Reports testing -- Since 1992, a Japanese car has been crowned the
top-rated sedan 12 times. However, a domestic sedan recently earned that
distinction thanks to the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which beat out a number of
luxury offerings like the Audi A6 and Lexus LS 460L. |
