These two leagues have different rules. In National League, pitchers need to
bat. American league, pitchers do not have to. AL also allows designated
hitters, who do not play defense and only come to bat.
David Ortiz is the primary DH of Red Sox. However, when Red Sox plays in a
ballpark owned by a National League team, NL rules prevail. In order to keep
his bat in the lineup, he has to play a defensive position. That is why he
was a 1B.
