to too many places in the first year
Just get the experiment going first and I am sure you will do better in the

lot of time. I would first apply some small foundation grants to cover any
potential gap you may have in the 2nd or 3rd year (they tend not to require
a lot preliminary data and are easier to get). At the same time, I would
focus on developing preliminary data for the NIH R01. Everything in the lab
should be geared toward that for the first two years. Papers are not so
important in the beginning, since once you get money, papers will come along.
Also try to go to meetings related to your field and do your best to get to
know people who may sit on your study section and review your grant. This is
very very important, because once you leave a good impression on them that
your are doing quality research, they will look at your grant favorably.
Another important point is to have your grant read by at least three
collegues who have written successful grants (believe me, this can make a
huge difference).

need one good/excellent postdoc/student plus a good lab manager/tech to get
one's tenure(first R01 and a first major publication etc)...Though it is
likely very hard for a junior PI, esp a Chinese junior PI...Don't know ur
school, in our center, some funds from foundations are virtually guaranteed
for junior PIs, much easier than R01 but it seems the tracking record and
the environments count a lot and they could amount as much as a R01...R01
only has A1 A2 now, one has to be very careful about it...have senior
faculty's critics could be very helpful while have a peer (say your postdoc
if he/she could function at a reasonable level) to discuss on daily base is
also very valuable...you are already half way, If you can have a talented/
motivated postdoc or even a graduate who would feel strongly he/she is in
the same boat as u...In general, strongly academic-oriented postdoc
candidates are more likely to be that way...

many PIs started applying funding when they were still postdoc, and they
had at least half data for 2-3 decent papers.

if one fresh PI count his/her tenure/R01 on good postdoc only, it is
almost certain this fresh PI is dead...
good or well experienced postdocs seldom choose a so so PI as supervisor
at all.
Good postdoc shall focus on ones that can help him/her for network...
a fresh PI is nothing in terms of network...

possibility like that:))...I know at least two or more cases on this board
that happened...If one's direction is very promising and personally
reasonable, it is not entirely impossible I guess but as I said early it is
not easy and certainly one shouldn't count on that....but the flip side is
as wrong to hire in a hurry...BTW, for a reasonably good PI, one shall be
able to just get his/her own R01 and tenure by working like a postdog for
another five ys if it has to be that way, right?

As we all agree, one can only rely on him/her self, to rely on good
student and postdoc is difficult.
At this economic environment, it is hard to say a good PI can survive
if only working hard...
I may be too much, but I really would say the social network is
more important than pure science, I am not saying science is not
important.
Problem is I would say 50-80% PIs doing science of similar quality,
the rest are 10% bad one and 10% really novel ones.

are tons of people with great funds but without much productivity...
nonetheless, for some, we are inheritedly compromised when coming to over-
networking...take myself as an example, I am trying and believe I could do
it, but after all just not my cup of teas...I would rather work and fight
harder...sounds pretty silly/stupid, isn't it?

都是曲曲折折中往前走吧
不过大趋势往前就好了
所以一时的挫折也是暂时的
