research. Folding laundry is far more complicated than the drilling and
sampling done by the robots on Mars. It requires robotic vision to
recognize irregular shapes, computational geometry to untangle a balled up
piece of clothes and fine mechanical control with feedback loops based
on image processing. With the level of sophistication developed in the
laundry experiment, robots can be made to do a lot of complex tasks. And
folding laundry is perhaps one of the cheapest experiments to develop the
sophisticated technologies.
It only shows that scientists need to do a MUCH better job educating the
public. But then, Fox News is there for the sensationalization, not the
truth. |

而且也从来不道歉，而且还能因此被认为是英雄。
而美国左派一般都特别伪善，一旦说错什么话就被迫下台了。
像NPR 一个什么高层，就骂了一句什么脏话被人录到了，顿时舆论大哗，只好
下台了。而类似的话，或者更过分的话，右派的人天天讲，也没有人拿这个说
什么。

话说回来，科普太重要了。The scientific community 应该认真地想一想如何鼓励（
回报）相关的投入。

。结果就被FIRE了，FOX马上花3个MILLION给雇走了

整个事件的背景是，右派要砍断对NPR的公立资金来源。然后NPR 的人对此
非常不满。然后某右派组织就派两个人装成穆斯林的人去给NPR 捐款，并把
过程偷拍了下来放到网上去。在对话中中NPR的一个高层告诉对方说他觉得
tea party 的人是scary, racist,另外他还说（估计是气话）NPR拿不到联邦的
钱弄不好在长期上反而更好。
然后这个事情被爆出来之后，茶党的人就攻击他说他搞人身攻击，结果他就被
迫辞职了。
当时我就想，美国的左派太软弱，经常被人push over. 说对方是racist 有什么
不对的？茶党的人大部分本质上都是racist。而茶党的人还搞这种肮脏的手段，
居然还派人假扮成“穆斯林捐款者”去偷录对方，也没有人指出其中的不对？

发帖数: 1764 | 8 做research的人都希望funding越多，来得越容易越好。政府立项，纳税人付钱，可能
是最容易的。不过政府官僚，中间层次多，效率很难讲。就像NIH的intramural，七十
年代也是非常辉煌的，九十年代以后基本就是低效的代名词了。如果broad，stowers开
始是靠政府，也不会发展这么快。现在那帮做的最好的biologists，对政府的直接依赖
都很小。
而作为纳税人资助的项目，如果不能进行好的outreaching，情况好的时候没人注意，
经济稍微一差，公众的不满情绪就会上涨。
也许除了少部分被富人养起来的科学家，或者本身就是富人的科学家，科学工作者都得
先能养活自己。在大学的能教书，在研究所的能提供一些基本的服务。科研在经济困难
的时候变成其副业。
又想起很久以前，国内的生物系靠卖优质发酵菌株赚经费的事了。以前觉得这段回忆很心酸，现在觉得至少当时是自食其力了。 |
