ZnO has a high solubility in water because it reacts with water. Many
reported papers mentioned this property, but several published papers in
some journals state their ZnO NPs can directly conjugated with proteins for
labeling or imaging.

Really?
I'm not sure, because I experimentally did optical trapping of ZnO nanowires
suspended in water, and with 1064nm Laser illuminating the ZnO nanowires
for hours and they are still intact.

You can search some papers on ZnO NP surface modification. These papers
discussed this issue. Usually they coated ZnO NPs with silica in organic
solvents and then did phase transfer to aqueous solutions. Silica layer will
prevent the reaction of ZnO NP with water.I think Wang Zhonglin's group
discussed ZnO nanowire's etching by water or buffer solutions in 2006 or
around in advanced materials.
In some recent ACS journals, some papers discussed ZnO NPs fate in
environments.They found ZnO NPs releasing Zinc ions under various conditions

Our samples were provided by our collaborators and it must have been
modified then.
