我们2014的目标是更多基层华裔领袖的成功当选 (可能主要是华人聚居区)。但是2016
的目标是没有一个总统候选人愿意冒着落选的大风险散布不负责任的辱华言论,这就需
要 battleground states的星星之火了。

The concept of swing states, swing elections and block voting is very
powerful in democratic process.

(世界日报) In most of the recent presidential elections, bashing China was
an obligatory stance for the non-incumbent candidates. This kind of
rhetoric is so common that nobody bat an eye until JK incident when its
insideous long term consequence becomes apparent.
This should not be. The American system is designed to protect a small
minority from the abuses of the majority. The candidates have strong
disincentive to alienate any small block of passionate voters. Because they
may pick up a few undecided voters, but will definitely lose these
passionate voters. And remember that Al Gore lost the 2000 election on <600
votes in Florida and every presidential election since then had close
states where small margin decided victory for the next presidents.
Here are an incomplete list of the possible Battleground states 2016: Ohio,
Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, North/South
Dakota, Georgia, N/S Carolina, Iowa, virginia, New Hampshire, Missouri,
Georgia. Some of them are closer than others. Some like Iowa and N
Hampshire are important as leading primary battleground so ultimately
influence the tone of election very heavily.
There should also be a list of the most hotly contested seats for congress
and governorship. Be ready and focus. We want to create a world where
bashing China is for LOSERS (2014/2016), and a world where nobody should bat
an eye to see a Chinese-American Supreme court Justice or a Chinese
American President of the US (2016 and beyond). They may be 3nd generation
Taiwanese, or 5th generation Philipino Chinese, or whatever. But they
should NOT have to demonize China and denounce their ancestry in order to
become the leader of the United States. The same way that Obama doesn't
have to denounce Kenya, Kennedy doesn't have to denounce Ireland or Catholic
Church.
Yes. We are small minority in some of the battleground states like Ohio and
Florida, early primary states New Hampshire and Iowa. But some of these
states were so close in 2000, 2008 that even 400 votes could swing the whole
election. So we must focus our energy and make it our goal that in 2016,
none of the presidential candidates could afford to frivolously bash China
either during primary process or election process. They may or may not win
a few
votes from racists, but they will absolutely LOSE every one of our votes.
Eastern Indians aren't a big majority in Louisiana, but they got an Indian
American Governor. Being small minority is not an excuse for not defending
our rights. We are a small minority but the American democracy is designed
to protect
even a small minority from abuse by the majority. We must learn to play
the game and to win our American dream.
Because we are equally human, equally American and we can.

that is: Don't bash China for fun. You may win a few racist votes; but
you definitely will lose our 400 or even 4000 votes in the most competitive
states.
为了2016, 我们必须要好好组织battleground states。 请总统候选人,副总统候选人

but fair criticism should be balanced with responsible messages of peace and
respect.

In US, Presidential election is based on electoral colleges which in most
states is winner take all. You need to read up on the hanging chad
election in Florida which settled in Supreme court in favor of G W Bush.
Basically Al Gore lost the presidential election on 2000 because of 536
votes in Florida.

In US elections, candidates have a strong disincentive to
alienate voting blocks of passionate voters. But because of the lack of an
effective Chinese American voting block (especially in the battleground
states), so far all nonincumbent candidates had the incentive to bash China
for no reason on the campaign track. This is what we need to change for
2016.

Some comments from a Taiwanese gal on facebook:
First, I'd like to say that in no way do I think China = CPP - that is
actually the point I was trying to make. When politicians criticize "China"
(they mean CCP policy or government and not the people) Criticism of China
is not something people should consider racist. Criticizing the Chinese
government (CCP) and its policies are often valid and these criticisms are
obviously going to be more prevalent during an election given the importance
of China-America economic/political relations.
There are many ignorant people in all countries - you should realize this.
If they act in irresponsible ways you cannot always blame political leaders.
There is individual responsibility.
For example when Chinese leaders condemn Japan it often leads to increased
Chinese nationalism and aggression or attacks on Japanese people, or
Japanese companies in China by ordinary Chinese citizens. Is this fair? Do
we blame China's leaders for this? Is it all their fault? Of course, you
will not say the Chinese government should not criticize Japan will you?
Is it not similar when US politicians criticize certain Chinese policies -
such as keeping the Chinese currency artificially low. China - criticizes
American QE policies too. It is tit-for-tat stuff. You refer to "China-
Bashing", I'd like to know exactly what criticism of China you think was
unfair or racist. Was it when Romney said he would name China as a "currency
manipulator"? Anything else?
I do not support Romney or Rumsfield or Bush or other leaders and criticize
a lot of American policies as you do. I do support their right to criticize
other countries policies though. Even if they are hypocrites, they can still
say what they want.
Correct me if I am wrong, but you seem to be dangerously close to saying
that no one can or should criticize China. It seems to me you are saying
criticizing China (China here means the Chinese Communist PArty Government
and its policies) = hating Chinese. This is a dangerous idea.
First, it seems to connect all Chinese to China. But many Chinese Americans
or other Chinese in the world have no connection at all with China - they
don't care about China and don't want anything to do with China - that is
their right. China is only an old cultural home - much the same way as many
Canadians or Americans have cultural connections to other countries but do
not identify with them now. Not all Chinese feel threatened at all when
China is criticized and certainly some agree very strongly with the
criticisms of China.
Second, connecting criticism of China to racism against Chinese in America
could lead to the suppression of legitimate criticism of the CCP and Chinese
government policies.
You may argue against racism and stereotypes presented by politicians, but
not against legitimate criticism of government policies and actions.
"We want to create a world where China-bashing is for losers" ---- ok what
does this mean?
Please define "China-bashing" - this could be a euphamism for - "We want to
prevent all criticism of the CCP."
Indeed, this is what has happened with Israel and the Jewish lobby. Some
groups that strongly support Israel have worked very hard to equate
legitimate criticism of the Israeli government to Anti-semitism and hatred
against Jews, when these two things are very different. Criticizing and
opposing Israeli policies and actions does not = hating Jews. Unfortunately,
for many it does mean this and it has prevented legitimate discourse and
debate about Israeli policies.
Jen,
I have no idea what you are trying to say about Obama not having to denounce
Kenya or Kennedy not having to denounce Ireland or the Catholic Church, or
Romney the Mormon church. What does this have to do with anything?
I agree with you about one thing. I also hope to see a world where nobody
would bat an eye for a Chinese-American Supreme court Justice or a Chinese
American President of the US (2016 and beyond). And I also agree they should
not HAVE TO criticize China to get elected, but if they CHOOSE to criticize
China - NO ONE should call them a "China-basher."
I hope to see a world where any Chinese American, or any American in fact,
can criticize Chinese (CCP) government policy and not be automatically
called a "China-basher" or be said to be "demonizing" China.
Criticism of China DOES NOT = criticizing Chinese.
Criticizing China DOES NOT = hatred of Chinese.
Denouncing China's government = denouncing your ancestry.
The government of China and the people of China are separate.
Chinese in China and Chinese outside or China are not necessarily connected.
All Chinese and China are not connected.
Not all Chinese have any sympathies for China.
Being Chinese DOES NOT mean you have to be proud of China or patriotic.
Maybe you want to have nothing to do with China at all. This is your right.
How about you also use the term "華人". There is no need to use the term 中
國同胞 OR 華僑同胞。Both of these imply a connection with China and perhaps
some patriotism. 同胞 is also a word most prevalently used by PRC Chinese
and often in a patriotic context. It will not give a bring a sense of
inclusion for all Chinese regardles of their political ideas .
I think 美國的華人 is better, don't you think?
It leaves out anything political and just describes the group as "Chinese in
America" or "American Chinese". The fight is against racism, bigotry and
ignorance. It is not a political battle to defend China and prevent
criticism of China.
It is best to focus on educating people that the Chinese of America are as
American as anyone else and deserve the same rights and opportunities.
There is also no need to get Jimmy Kimmel fired. It is clear his intention
was not to generate hate against Chinese. His niece and nephew are Chinese!
How can he hate Chinese?
It is better to forgive, but not forget.
Swan, are you not proud of Mr. Woo's accomplishment's as a Chinese American?
He has many great achievements, but you seem to really dislike him - why?

My reply:
Thanks Mei. So we agree on the goal. “华裔”
would be sufficient as our target audience. thank for pointing out the
nuance of "同胞“。 We want to bring the Chinese Americans together in
condemning bigotry and racism, not alienating them due to nuances in speech.
I do however, maintain that "China" has been scapegoated by Kimmel as a safe
"target" for racist-bashing. I explained why in this post:
http://www.mitbbs.com/article0/CivilSociety/2879_0.html
Kimmel mirrored exactly the behavior of media during recent
presidential elections: when China was hold up by reporters as an object of
scorn and concern, and the candidates invited to shoot at China to show
their patriotism and machismo.
The reporter would say to president:"what about China's trade deficit? human
rights record? spying on American companies? We owe China so much money,
what should we do about it? "
Truth #1: For everyone of these issues, you could substitute China with any
number of countries including ourselves and some of our key allies (Japan,
South Korea, Mexico, India, Pakistan, even European Union and Israel). Yes
global trade need to rebalance over time, but that is the nature of
economics. Before China, there was Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan;
after China, there will be any number of other countries going for the US
market, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Russia and what not. And the reporters
almost never target these countries. China is way overblown as a threat to
America or an evil power in almost every aspect and China is the only safe
target for our future presidents to trash. The reason is because Chinese-
Americans are divided and keep fighting each other and let this trashing go
on with NO penalty.
Truth #2: China is moving in the right direction in almost every way
possible in human rights and in market reform, and the Chinese are growing
up feeling incredibly friendly to the USA. But the politicians and media
continue to heap scorn and criticism on China because they think they could
get away with it and pick up a few undecided voters at the key states. And
we, the Chinese-American let them instead of crying foul and defending our
heritage.
What Kimmel really showed us is where the media's persistent and frivolous
scapegoating of China and bashing of China lead us. Our children are
manipulated to hate the Chinese and despise the Chinese and even laugh about
killing the Chinese.
Our children: the white children, the black children, and our Chinese-
American children. All sharing a little laugh about killing everyone in
China. No adult at ABC/Disney even saw what was wrong with it and dismissed
our concerns as not understanding their joke.
If this does not wake us up to the insideous dangers of media's China-
bashing and candidates' china-bashing ritual, then nothing would. I would
forgive Kimmel, but I would not forgive ourselves if we fail to stop this
from happening in 2016.
