According to my experience of my new EAD card which I got yesterday: http://trackgc.com/tr/CaseDiscussion.aspx?CaseType=EAD&CasePk=5721
The new card's date is from the expiration date of my previous card. So I
suggest you file the renewal earlier. There won't be some overlapped dates
wasted any way.

That was not the case for me. So seems it is pretty random.
