It also uses iterative decoding strategy, like Turbo code.
Turbo codes is very hot in the past few years.
It has a lot of application field in wireless system.
But now people found LDPC codes beat Turbo codes.

Bob Gallager is a professor in MIT. His PhD. dissertation in
1965 is called
Low Density Parity Checking Code. After the discover of
Turbo codes,
people start to realize that LDPC code works in a similar
way to Turbo codes.
If you are studying turbo codes, I suggest that you read the
recent paper
by McElice (Generalized Distributive Law). It's in IEEE
information theory
march 2000 issue.
By the way, if you are not interested for its own sake,
doing theory
