I used some preliminary shell scripting, and some
perl script like batch DHCP registration/scope generation
grep/awk/uniq/sort are used a lot for log searching
all kinds of grep, zgrep ..
some network scripting with expect/perl, I need to use more
on this too.
It would be good to know some commands like the
ping, traceroute, lft, fping3, tcpdump,
there is a security top 100 list, just go over that and install
most of them on your linux desktop and play with it.
We use ISC bind/dhcp, ntp.org ntp, freeradius.org/freeradius
nagios,rancid etc. Just try to get involved in all of them. At least
know where to find things and modify things.
