as much a fuss out of the two different pronunciations
of "the" as we do.
I have gotten into the habit of say only the short "the"
(with the schwa "e", not the long "e').
The rule that I was taught was short "the" + consonant-
initial word, and long "the" + vowel-initial word

however... not every native speaker speaks in complete conformity with
standard english
the standard mandarin has rules on the pronunciation of 一, 不 when followed
by other words... not every native mandarin speaker follows
the rules (for instance, i don't)

of the rules for 一七八不. For example I almost
always say 八個 as 拔個, but I never say 七個 as 棋個.
My guess is not all native Mandarin speakers know
all of these 變調 rules, nor the differences between
語音 and 讀音 in Mandarin. Many native English speakers
probably don't know the difference between the short
and long "the" either.

Educated Chinese, actually those who received standardised primary school
education, should know this...
I think the English education in the US put minimum emphasizes on
pronunciation...
