in the process of negotiating start-up.
they asked me to send a wish list,
then pretty much agreed on most stuff i asked for,
except for a computing cluster.
the head emailed me and asked me to call him to discuss
the computing issue, and the salary.
so, how to negotiate salary over a telephone conversation?
a possible scenario:

-....
-head: by the way, we are going to pay you 12m salary 100k, what do you
think?
-me: well, that's about 75 percentile | d****y

most of my colleagues got offers that pay around 100k (equivalently) for 12
months.

Second, T-T position most likely is 9-month salary, other 3 is on your own,
some have summery salary for first 2-3 years as a start-up, not always.
Unless you will teach during summer, not quite sure if anyone wants to do that.
Third, You said it is an atypical college, you might get an atypical salary too, who knows. If you could, please post your final number here and area, so we can see | B**G

but my conversation with the head happened almost the same as i jokingly
coined, except that the head was very well prepared. after my 95%-tile
argument, he cited cheaper cost of living compare to peer institutions to
justify his quote. and i agreed.
just received a draft offer in writing today, to my surprise, the start-up
package is bigger than what i asked for. love this place already.

start-up, salary most likely are standard (pre-set when creating the
position). If you asked for less, they will give you standard; if you asked
for more, they need to either stick to their original budget or go back to
re-do the budget if budget is not issue.
Sounds like a good place for their offer is beyond your expectation!

Would you tell us what department this is? Most universities do not have
statistical genetics as a department. | m****c

for example, statistics, biostatistics, genetics, biology, and medical
school of course.
