You may say I knew them well. But actually I did not.
Some were sweet, some were kind, others looked fierce.
I thought girls were malignant when I was in third grade because I sat
nearby an older girl full of muscle. If I accidentally crossed the line on
the table she set, I would be beaten in my arm. I hated her but didn't dare
to tell anyone because she warned that I would be beaten more heavily if I
told anyone.
I sat nearby her for about 3 years from first grade to thrid grade. I hardly
studied well because everyday I worried about whether I crossed the line
again.
Finally at the end of the term of third grade, I required to change sitting
place. I was assigned to sit nearby a quiet girl.
She was extremely quiet. I thought she was a dumb until one day she asked me
to move my arm back to my table because I occupied a large part of her
table when I took a snap during noon.
I said, 'sure, only if you can make a friend with me. Friends, you know,
should talk with each other, not keep quiet all the time.'
She smiled and said, 'OK.'
That's the happiest time I'd ever had. When the third grade ended, I got
three straight As for the courses. She got four. But I was not jealous of
her at all.
I proposed that we sat together next semester and she agreed. She gave me a
pencil and I gave her a rubber.
Summer vacation soon passed and the forth grade began. I sat my original
place and expected her to show up in the seat next to me. But it kept empty
for several weeks. 'She moved to another school?' I asked myself and hoped
not.
But one month later, my teacher introduced us a new girl student and
assigned her
to sit in just that empty seat next to me.
I cried that evening when I got home. She was gone. Where was she?
I went along well with the new girl student, but not as that well as her.
Sometimes I still could remember her, her beauty, her smartness, and her
quietness. I kept inquiring the students from her town or nearby her town
about her when I had time.
But they shaked their heads.
One day when I handed homework to teachers' room, a teacher asked others, '
XXX has not been at school for quite a long time.'
One teacher answered, 'she was died of an accident during summer vacation.'
"what kind of accident?"
"probably drowning in a well when she went out to take water for her family."
That would be the first time when I realized there is not only life but also
death existing in the world. Coming home, I took the pencil she gave me and
buried it in my backyard and prayed for her, "hope we could always be
friends." |

because I don't know which day I would die as those people.
In my graduate school, there was a male student in my apartment who loved
study and scored high. But he killed himself in Shenzhen Square just several
months after his graduation.
I missed his call one day before he suicided.
What could he talk about with me at that time?
If I made that call, could I have stopped this?
I have been really sorry for missing his call. But I know for sure that
he saved all the rest of us. Because I always believed that one of six
students in our apartment might kill himself. If it was not him, it could be
me. His sacrifice waked up the rest of us, made us realize the meaning of
living in the world, and gave us courage to face this world.
