when defensive player makes contact with offensive player before the ball is
snapped, it's encroachment. the play is blown dead immediately (actually no
play at all since it happens before snap).
when defensive players line up in neutral zone or cross LOS when the ball is
snapped (no contact with offensive players), it's offside, refs blow whistle
until the play is dead. Then offense can choose accept or decline based on the
play result. |
