I am thinking about a hand gun and a shot gun (with bird shots). I do have
a little boy at the house, so I cannot get something too big and bulky (hard
to hide). Maybe I should only get a handgun?
I read up on Glock17, but they were out of them, so I never got to see one.
I tried several just for feel at the guy shop and Taurus 809 seems to be the
best fit in my hand and easiest to click. It might be the compact model,
had 13 rounds in it. I have somewhat small hands and not much strength, so
I don't think I can handle anything too heavy.
The sales guy didn't even bother to talk to me much about a shotgun, just
said the kick would be too much for me. I didn't know about the bird shot
option, but I can go back another time to look at them.
I am really new at this whole thing, just trying to learn. I will try to
sign up and take some classes before I buy. But any advice greatly

I am not sure about 12GA, though - but you can always try it out at just
about any skeet range for like $20.
I would almost always prefer a shotgun than pistol for home defense - as
long as you have some practice - not buying a gun then leave it up on the
shelf... Shotgun is just more effective, more productive in that setup than
a pistol. Try some 20GA, or even 12GA shotgun at skeet range. You will have
a much better idea about it.
btw, I think pistol is actually more dangerous than shotgun if you have a
small boy at home - if you have to use the word "dangerous" as I do not
think any firearm is "dangerous" as long as you train yourself and your kids
on it.

I guess your best choice would be "hands-on" any gun you are interested.
Not only fit in hand, but also you need to go to range, try to rent
different gun and find the best fit when shooting (a gun fit best might not
shoot as accurate, feeling will change when shooting).
Pistol will need a lot of practice. Shot gun is easier, but recoil more, and
yet require more stocking space. Same theory for semi-auto rifle to the
shot gun.
VERY VERY IMPORTANT THING:
NEVER think you can hide anything at home from your child!!!
Think about our childhood, is there any secret at our home to us?
A Gun Vault would be your best guess for protecting your child and others.

and not very strong. I am secretly hoping that the sound of clicking a gun
in the middle of the night would be enough to deter any small robber. But
you never know. So I am prepared to shoot, if necessary, at any intruder.
Any recommendation on what to buy, brand and model? Gun shop guys around
here seem to have quite bit of discrimination against women, let alone Asian
woman. That is the reason why, I think, I didn't even get to be introduced
to a decent shotgun. If I speak their lingo, I might be treated better.
All of my Asian friends seem to be against guns.
I also don't want to be out of ammo. I was told that bird shots might be
the best for home defense. Do I need anything more powerful, just in case?
I don't like anything too powerful, in case I get knocked over myself,
before I get a chance to fire again.
How about magazine? What kind should I get to shoot more than just a couple
of rounds? I think that's why I was looking at a hand gun, I would have
more bullets left if I miss.
I read some of the older post, I agree that the price might drop and the
availability might improve after the panic time. I am in a smaller town and
there are a quite a few hunters around town. With the way they are
printing money and being in my area, I might have to opt for buying ammo
online. Any good suggestions?

As far as a safe, would I have time to deal with it in an emergency? I
might be so scared and forget the password, or my hands would be so sweaty
that I cannot hold the key.
I guess I will not buy one without trying a few. Can you explain a lot more
on how different it might feel? I am really new at this whole thing.

It only have 4 buttons on top and you can set your combination.
I always kept 2 pistols and 2 loaded mags in mine, and I can open and load
the gun in seconds.

concealed carry license) in your state. Then you could not only protect
yourself and family at home, but also on the road. But yeah, make a shotgun
to be your first firearm and then other options. It's good to get solid

发帖数: 1397 | 15 First of all, try out 20GA and 12GA with live fire first - determine if you
can use a 12GA. 12 gauge is always better than 20 gauge - if you can handle
it. While you are on it, also pay attention to the stock - if the length of
pull is too much for you.
After determined the gauge, go get a 18.5" barrel pump action - that's the
shortest legal shotgun barrel. Pump action is simple - fault-tolerant and "
best of all", it has the racking noise you are looking for. If you are OK
with the regular rifle stock, then fine. Otherwise, either get a shorter
youth model or a tactical stock (AR-like adjustable stock). I prefer
adjustable stock since it is more versatile - your kid could even use it in
the future - and I do not think you can get a youth model in 12GA anyway.
You could even get a Blackhawk recoil reduction adjustable stock for 100
bucks on Amazon - 5 minutes to put on. I never tried those - so can not say
if it works - but lots of people swear by it.
So, get a 18.5" barrel, pump action, 12GA or 20GA shotgun, and some clay
target shot to practice and 00 Buck for your uninvited visitors. Remington
870 and Mossberg 500 are the most popular ones - for $300 - $500.
btw, forget about scaring intruders with pump racking noise - you are
bringing a knife mentality to a gun fight. The moment you grab a gun, you
have upgraded the conflict to the maximum level, putting both your life and
your intruder's life at stake - and you do not want to loose yours. If I
were you, my strategy would be to designate a secrete/good place near
bedroom as a hideout, like a small attic. Keep your firearm and a phone
there. If something happens, get your kids to the safe room and call the cop
. Hold your gun and wait it out. Shoot the intruder only if he is going up
to you. Do not hold your shotgun and go around your house, trying to hunt
the intruder - if you are not a hunter by nature, you will be hunted...

I have held a shot gun at the shop the other day, just never got to compare
them. The weight is one thing, but the pump is the other problem. I had a
hard time pumping it. Do you have a youth model to recommend?
I think you are right about both the shotgun and a pistol. I do plan to get
a 9mm later. In fact, I just got some 9mm ammo from someone's link on this
board this morning.
Any suggestion on a safe for shotgun?

to work or my boy's school (against their rules). Not that I would
volunteer the info, but I seem to go from home to school and work most of
the time. So I will take the classes, but might not opt in for a CCL.

recoil.
Go to a firearm training class or ask experienced shooters for guidance when
you first start, and practice loading with empty hulls and dry fire often.

For HD with small children, I would suggest pistol; or a revolver if found

concealed and bedside secure.

hunters. They said I shuold not have any trouble with 12ga at all, unless I
shot a lot at a time. I will have to go out with them soon to try.
