A full inscription consists of four parts: (1) a preface stating that on
such-and-such a day
a bone or shell was cracked and that So-and-so divined; (2) a "charge"
asking a question; (3)
the prognostication; and (4) the verification, telling what actually
happened. Few
inscriptions contain all four parts. The dating of the inscriptions is also
generally limited to
the specification of a day within a chronological system containing a cycle
of sixty days.
From this information, the naming of the diviner, and other clues, it is
sometimes possible to
achieve a more precise dating, as in the case of some solar-eclipse
inscriptions during the
reign of King Wu Ding
