Regarding (2): I was in same situation, I actually would not bother trying
to persuading manager(s) how to re-define my job duty. The job duty/
description has been well-defined by them before you get onboard, and they
have been overseeing you, so, not too much point to persuading them viewing
you as a research person in a research oriented role.
I would just try to explain to them the current backlog situation, and your background
(which is good enough for going with eb1b route if sponsored). And then the
key is doing all this shits is just for immigration purpose, nothing would
change on job duty side.
