First you must be sure which town you decide to go. If I say "how about a
$350000 townhouse around Chelmsford", that makes great difference among Ayer,
Westford and Billerica.
If a SFH and TH are in the same price range, no doubt TH will cost much less
than SFH coz you don't need to take care of garden, sewage, private water,
roof and so on. In addition, most TH have Home owner association, they pretty
much take care of most of maintenance and improvement on this community.

In MA, generally speaking, HOA and snow removal, water and sewage are
included.
As to utility, it really depends. My friends 2500 sqt. ft town house got 25'
ceiling bedroom and living room. They pay more gas fee for heating than a 1600
sqr. ft SFH.
For TW, in most cases, the maintenance is cheaper, you don't neet to spend
money on garden etc.
In some area of MA, the condo association fee can go above 500$. They usually
