Okay, this place is 'really' remote and 'really' inaccessible. I 'strongly' agree that this place is the most remote place and toughest day hike in San Gabriel.
Final stats: 14 miles, 7,500' ft elevation gain.
Some background on the hike. When Ze (organizer at Meetup) posted this hike
on Meetup, he named this hike "The Crown Jewel of the San Gabriels". You
must deal with rough, brushy, exposed cross-country and class 3 climbing,
basically you get everything on this hike that's why he named it "Crown
Jewel".
The ridge from near Twin Peaks:
He was being very secretive on the hike because it turned out that the route
is at the edge, but inside the closed area from the Station Fire. The hike
will not go through anything that has burned, but the ANF is pretty
incompetent and will keep it closed for at least another year, but we can't
wait, so 18 people signed up on Meetup. I was surprised to see so many
people on a hike like that, but once Ze sent out the hike info via email, 9
people dropped - and only 5 showed up on the hike at the end, sounds about
right.
Ze had us started at 4:30 AM and follow a trail down, but unfortunately the
trail became hard to follow one point at the dark, so we cross-county down
to the Twin Peak saddle, which provided a good warm-up. Once you are down
to the saddle, its a pretty good use trail from saddle to the peak itself -
which we reached at 6:45 AM. (FYI, Twin Peaks is still in closed area,
hiking in closed area subject to fine.. blah blah BLAH)
We took a short break and started doing the cross country the ridge around 7
AM. The entire ridge is only 3 miles long, my first thought was "how bad
can it get?!"
Well, going over the first part of the ridge is just nice and steep - but as you get down, the terrain gets rugged and loose. Loose as in loose rocks, mixed of sands and rocks slab. This ridge is so brutal that you will have wished it had been burnt at some point, the 'endless' bushwhacking made even when all of us had long sleeves on intimidated; my brand new garden grove wore out after the hike.
When you are not bushwhacking, you'll have to deal with 'endless'
scrambling / bouldering which goes on for the entire ridge. I wanted to turn back at certain point, but again I tell myself its only 3 miles, i'll be there in minutes. (yeah, right!)
We continued at a moderate place until which at about 6,800 ft, there's one really exposed down climbing (class 3) in which I don't think you can avoid because the other parts of ridge are being cliffed out - one or two sections have some some odd movements which must be taken with care -- or, you can climb over the brush the section and avoid the exposed" part - either way you'll need to climb down a big rock around 30 ft. The rocks around this ridge is BIG and has some cool rock formation that it is more commonly found in the Sierra which is pretty unique consider you are actually in San Gabriel
We were making good progress, by 11 AM or 4 hours(!) into cross country, we
finally reached almost the last point of the ridge which is also the most
difficult part of the ridge -- there's a rock about 50 ft I'd say that you
mush climb down intoto a gully to avoid, we weren't sure of the route at
first and lost about 20 minutes finding the way because the leader (Ze) was
not seen anywhere, by the time we realized he took that route, we figured
it will take us at least a good 45 minutes to get to summit and 2 hours back
which wasn't very good as we realized we need more time to climb back up
the ridge than climb down -- so we decided to take a break and took our time
to go back -- but none of us regret for turning back for this hike. Ze was
the only one made to the summit; but he was was pretty determine to get the
hike done because it was his second attempt.
Here's a shot of the gully, the gully is steep, loose and brushy:
I have done a lot in these few months - from Cactus to Clouds to Jacinto to Mt Baldy going over San Antonio Ridge, but based on previous my attempt on Sat with 4 others agree that this hike is more difficult and challenging than Iron to Baldy traverse (and C2C), because you must go through this ridge TWICE. Endless brushwhacking, scrambling is really exhausted (both mental and physically).
Climbing part was also really difficult and exposed, there's one section that I was trying to go down on a class 4 - but the hand hold was really awkward and hard to find the next step, I think I almost fall on that one - so I pull myself up and went through a class 3 - but it was really climbing on the tress and brushes - that sure was the fun part.
Here's another shot of the difficult part:
It took us about 4.5 hours to climb back up to Twin Peaks, we got back to car around 6:40 PM - almost 15 hours later. Pretty fast, IMHO.
Even this is a failed attempt, I don't know if I will go back again because of the exhaustion plus you're on a time constraint to complete the ridge during the available day light, it is extremely dangerous to do this ridge at night.
I don't know why could anyone want to go over this ridge, but they must be crazy to think about it and insane to actually do it.

Its not surprise that there is only 1 signature on the summit register and it was placed on the summit since 6-28-08. Ze has the second signature.

True, but whenyou have to go back to the ridge, there are more climbing to do
and by the time you will be tired already, so you need more time for rest
and going slower to prevent any mistakes.

Another overview of the ridge:
Once you are on the ridge, most parts of the ridge is look like this:
and this:
The climbing section was like you either go down with exposure or you
can go to the left side and climb down the brush to avoid the exposure.

I like this quote from William O. Douglas, from the book of "Man and
Mountain"
"I learned early that rightness of life is found in adventure. Adventure
calls on all the faclties of mind and spirit. It develops self-reliance and
independence. Life then teems with excitement. But man is not ready for
adventure unless he is rid of fear. For fear confines him and limits his
scope. He stays teth...ered by strings of doubt and indecision and has only
a small and narrow world to explore."

Well, first of all, Triplet Rocks isn't THAT dangerous, nothing like
climbing K2 or Mt Everest - there are risks, but I tried my best to minimize
the risk from accidents.
I agree this is one aspect of Chinee culture, that they consider the
concerns of friends and family, but it doesn't mean people that is doing the
adventure doesn't, but they just consider the risks and concerns and making
a trade off over it. Of course this trade off also depends on how much you
value your individual freedom and goals vs the family values.
