In 2010, she was part of a group of 20 students from Bejing Institute of
Technology who came to UCR for the fall quarter. She studied business and
math.
Bronwyn Jenkins-Deas, director of international education programs for UC
Riverside Extension, met Lu only once — chatting with her at a reception
for the Bejing students — but remembered the young woman.
“I remember talking to her about her impressions here at UC Riverside,”
Jenkins-Deas said. “She was a very bright student.”
When she heard Lu was the third fatality in the Boston bombings, Jenkins-
Deas said she pulled up Lu’s school record.
“She was a solid A student,” she said.
Lu was known at UCR by her American name, Dorothy, university officials
said.
"The important thing is she's remembered as her name, not as a Chinese
student who was an exchange student," Jenkins-Deas told NBC4. "I hope that
people will learn about her because she lived such a short life. We want her
to have as much impact as possible in terms of remembering things about her
and what she did. It was a real tragedy."
The local family who hosted her did not want to speak to news media
Wednesday, but UCR officials said the family was devastated. | t****e
