You can catch the cable cars from a few spots around town, including the
famous Powell-Hyde Line at Powell and Market Street, which passes the twisty
Lombard Street and the equally popular Russian Hill neighborhood. Relative
to other forms of transportation, the cable cars are a bit expensive at $5 a
ride, but travelers find the experience well worth it. Visitors can also
purchase one-day, three-day, and seven-day Passport passes, which allow
riding on streetcars, buses, and cables. Prices vary from $13 to $26,
depending on length of pass purchased.
You can reach the marketplace via the Embarcadero BART/Muni Station and
several public buses lines. Car parking is also available near the
marketplace. The marketplace is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m with
slightly different hours on the weekends. Restaurants and stores, however,
maintain varied hours. The farmers' market operating hours are 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Transamerica Pyramid.
The Mandarin Hotel is the tallest hotel in San Francisco and there is the
most amazing catwalk connecting its two towers on the top floor. You will
catch a fantastic view of North Beach and the Transamerica Building from up
there, especially at dusk.

Stinking Rose

Chinatown and North Beach are comfortably close to each other by way of
walking distances. Try walking up and down a few of the North to South
streets in Chinatown (Grant, Stockton, Powell) to get some of the great
neighborhood culture. After shooting Chinatown, make your way North to North
Beach. There are some great night shots of the neon of the strip clubs on
Broadway as well as great views in Washington Square Park of St. Peter and
Paul church as well as beautiful views up at the top of Coit Tower.

Tomales Point at Point Reyes National Seashore
(40 miles north of SF)
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 10.2 miles / 16.4 km
Duration: Half day
Overview: It's nearly impossible to get lost on the way to Tomales Point, a
rocky fingernail of land poking into the Pacific Ocean north of San
Francisco. And that's a shame, because if ever there was a place to lose
yourself, this is it.
The narrow, windswept sliver of Point Reyes National Seashore ending at
Tomales Point has just one main trail, which rolls gently for just under
five miles. Along the way you'll see the ragged coastline and roving tule
elk herds that make this the essential northern California coastal hike.
While seabirds and sea breezes complement your Tomales Trail experience, the
tule elk are the main attraction. Every year during late summer and early
autumn the bulls use their giant racks of antlers to battle it out and build
harems of females to mate with. The "rut," as the mating season is called,
features fierce combat and the piercing, high-pitched bugling of bulls
declaring their dominance (or challenging another bull's).
Most of the year the elk will be standing around and grazing, but even so
they are a sight to behold. While most hikers prefer loops to out-and-back
routes, you'll have no issues with this one because after you reach the
rocky tip of Tomales Point, you'll get to see everything again on the way
back. And you'll want to.
Weather is the wild card for a Tomales Point hike: often the coast will be
fogged in during the morning, though it may clear up in the afternoon. Don't
worry about never seeing any elk: I've hiked here in pea-soup fog and rain
and still seen a few off in the distance.
Tips: Tomales Point requires a long drive and a long hike. Plan for an all-
day outing if you want to go the distance.
Don't count on solitude: this is a popular trail, especially during the elk
rut. The trails won't be packed, but they won't be empty, either.
Elk are massive, dangerous wild animals; never try to get close to one.
Human hide is no match for bull elk antlers; an unfortunate few have been
fatally gored.
Check the weather forecast for Point Reyes Station before you go. The hike's
worth doing in all weather but you'll have a better chance of enjoying
yourself if you're properly prepared.

Best Place to View Golden Gate Bridge
Batteries to Bluffs Trail
This short trail provides a great way to see the bluffs near the Presidio
and offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin that are hard to beat.
The trail is marked moderate because there are several places with steps and
some climbing if you decide to take the side trip down to Marshall Beach.
The trail is pretty short, which allows for you to extend your hike along
the Coastal Trail to the Golden Gate Bridge. The trail starts just off of
Lincoln Blvd above the beach (alternatively, you can start at the far end of
the trail, where there is a parking lot off of Lincoln Blvd.
Battery Spencer, Marin County
You’ll have to cross the bridge from the San Francisco side to the Marin
County side to Battery Spencer, a former military installation that
protected the bridge and the bay from foreign invaders during World War II.
Head through the historic army artifacts and crumbling buildings to land’s
end where you’ll be able to pose in your very own snapshot of the bridge
with the breathtaking background of the entire city of San Francisco behind
you. You can bike and hike from the San Francisco side — it’ll take some
legwork to get here.
Hawk Hill, Marin County
Further up the winding road from Battery Spencer, you’ll encounter Hawk’s
Hill, a former military lookout point perched atop one of the many mountain
tops that overlook the serene Marin Headlands to the north and San Francisco
Bay to the South. Here, you’ll get a panoramic view of the Golden Gate
Bridge and the metropolitan region of the Bay Area. Getting here can be
tricky — a grueling bike ride up steep grades on a narrow roadway is in
order to reach this point. Otherwise, hop in the rental car and spend the
gas money to get your shot. It’s well worth the view.
Fort Point, San Francisco
You’ve probably seen all the views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the top,
but have you seen it from below? You’d be quite surprised at the
architecture that goes into erecting the iconic structure, and you can get
your shot from the San Francisco side at Fort Point — yet another former
military installation — that allows everyone to feel the mist from the bay
waves crashing ashore while being directly underneath the bridge.
Getting here from Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 is simple — a brisk walk
and bike ride through the scenic Marina District and into the Presidio along
the water’s edge. There’s parking here too, free of charge, but it can be
in short supply during peak visiting hours.
Baker Beach/ The Presidio, San Francisco
Another shot of the bridge from the San Francisco side — this time from the
Presidio, the former US Army base that protected the Bay Area from enemies
during the Civil War to Vietnam. This photo was taken from one of the many
outlook points in the park grounds along Lincoln Road. Also, check out
nearby Baker Beach if you’re in the neighborhood where you can grab another
scenic shot of the bridge.
Fort Baker, Marin County
From Fort Baker on the Marin County side, this is one of the hidden coves
that boasts a million dollar view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Getting here is
a bit tricky because you’ll have to coast your way down from Highway 101
to the area directly underneath the bridge on the Marin County side. Here,
you’ll find Fort Baker — another ex-military base — that now houses the
Bay Area Discovery Museum, a hands on learning center that provokes the
senses and brain cells for kids. But this is the view you’ll be treated to
while you’re here at a place that few visitors and locals know about.

About 115 miles south of San Francisco, Monterey epitomizes Northern
California living with mild year-round temperatures, a marine sanctuary just
offshore and good cultural attractions.
The town served as California's capital under Spanish, Mexican, and American
flags, and by the early 1900s boasted an important sardine industry.
Surviving sites include the Royal Presidio Chapel, Monterey State Historic
Park, Custom House, Casa Soberanes, Larkin House, and other adobe buildings,
as well as touristy Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, home of the
celebrated Monterey Bay Aquarium
At the turn of the 20th century, Cannery Row was the site of a busy salmon
and abalone canning industry. These days, the historic quarter on the
peninsula is the go-to destination for dining and lodging.
The Fishwife restaurant at the resort serves California cuisine with a
Caribbean twist. For fresh seafood in more romantic surrounds, try Domenico'
s on the Wharf.
You can't visit Monterey without hitting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of
the best aquariums in the country. The psychedelic jellyfish display alone
is worth the admission price, and the Wild About Otters exhibit, with
freshwater otters from Asia and Africa, has everyone talking.

Back south on the PCH, a few miles from Monterey, is the artsy enclave of
Carmel-by-the-Sea - the start of the most scenic stretch of coastline along
the entire route.

South of Carmel is where the route really reels you into its splendor. And
while you never know when that ubiquitous coastal fog is going to lower a
curtain over the views, when it lifts it's as if Oz is being revealed.
The road winds high on the cliffs, with the crashing surf below. Many of the
beaches you'll see are inaccessible or require serious hikes in, making
them all the more enchanting.
It's less than 30 miles from Carmel to Big Sur, but the going is slow, as
the road snakes back and forth and travelers creep along to soak up the
scenery.
While the beatniks can no longer afford Big Sur these days, the area retains
much of that natural living and free loving vibe.

The Pfeiffer Arch at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur is one of Monterey County’s
secret wonders. Pfeiffer Beach is very hard to find for the uninitiated. It
is located at the end of unmarked Sycamore Canyon Road, which is the only
paved, un-gated road on the west side of Highway One between the Big Sur
Post Office and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
If you are heading south - the mile markers count DOWN. The turnoff will be
on your right 0.66 miles past the Ranger station. It is two miles to the
parking area and then a short walk down to the beach.

Hearst Castle - newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst's enormous slice
of paradise - is about 65 miles south of Big Sur, in San Simeon.
Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's crowded. And yes, it's worth visiting.
